My dad was among the very first landing party of the US Navy to arrive at Nagasaki after the bomb hit. He told me about seeing the shadows of people that were burnt into the concrete sides of walls that were still standing.
I was amazed at his one time only told story, that occurred when I was old enough to sit at the bar beside him. Sure do wish I could go back and do it again, this time knowing so many more questions that I never thought to ask back then!0 -
Every year on these anniversaries I am so sick of hearing about others who have issues with the use of the A-bombs in 1945.
For those types who pick and choose which portions of history serve their pre-conceived notions best...had Japan surrendered after Hiroshima, Nagasaki never would have been A-bomb target #2.
Had these bombs not been dropped and an invasion was the only way to end the war, the losses of Axis (Civilian and military)and Allied people would have been in the MILLIONS and taken YEARS to complete.
It was a necessary action that was dictated by the Japanese military, and I hold no guilt or remorse whatsoever for their use.
I do hope, for the sake of my kids (and future grandkids) and the world, that they are the only two atomic devices ever used in such a manner for all of eternity.0 -
