Maybe it's just me but, I'd be very hesitant to bid on some of these offerings at thousands of dollars without actually seeing the firearm in person?

I have bought many guns over a grand and up to 5k without an issue. If it was and old gun I think I would want to look over.

A good description, lots of clear pictures, and the sellers feedback, will determine the risk.
