Im only 53. I was born in 1965.
Is it me or are things getting so much worse. I have never seen this country as bad as it is right now.
I see the country getting to a dividing point in 10 to 20 years that we can not come back from.
Are times worse now than the depresion? Or are they just different.0 -
In some respects it's worse now than the depression. Back then most everyone was in the same boat. There were those that had nothing and a few that weren't affected much at all by the depression. But R's and the D's both wanted what was best for the country and worked towards that goal.
Now this country is so divided it just makes me sick. If I had the opporunity to go back to the 50's, I would go back in a heartbeat. Times were simpler, it didn't take much to make you happy, and I was happy (and I don't mean in a homo way). The standard of living was such that the Dad could make enough so that the Mom could stay home and raise the kids. The races weren't so divided, the economy was pretty good, and us kids could stay out until dark and no one bothered you or worried that you were up to no good.
I did most of my growing up in a small town of less than a thousand, and I imagine it was quite different in the big cities, but much different than it is now.
I did grow up living fairly close to Wright Patterson AF base, and every week we had at least one sonic boom that would rattle everything in the house including me. Nuclear annihilation was a constant threat, but to a kid it didn't affect us much.
I don't think we are that far away from an us vs them type of warfare, and I will be glad to participate. I'm that fed up with the way this society has devolved.0 -

Well, I started voting when I was 21, I'm 74 now and never missed voting in any election and this country's government has done nothing but gotten WORSE!0 -
It certainly is different. Whether better or worse depends upon your point of view. Technology is a vast improvement, except where it is not, like the current cell phone addition, the vid game addiction etc. Cars are better at keeping us alive through crashes, if not as good at staying in one piece. Socially, we are a deeply divided country and the rift between the right and left is deep.
The problem is, if you are in the middle of the ocean you cannot see which shore is closest. We need time to gain perspective, and of course history is written by the winners, so one side will certainly not write the history.0 -

i tend to remember the dark days of the vietnam era as the worst our country was divided. violence presided in everything from racial equity and political conventions. the country lost its innocense with all the assassinations of the days, and it was surely an "us versus them" time in our lives. the faith in our government eroded and the stark reality of that persists today. 0 -
made me sick to listen to the body count each evening from Nam and see how returning vets were treated ....now we have this WAR against civilians by those scum who have grown rich from the fact of just living in AMERICA using the opportunities available ....a war against this country by people who should be evicted 0 -

IMHO, it is our instant internet system (global communication) that gets all the world happenings within moments of when they occur. Everyone with a key board is voicing their opinion's all at once. No time is spent to ponder our thoughts.
Before the internet even if you were against something, no one knew your opinion and you pretty much kept it to yourself or shared your beliefs with those close to you.
Now, we here it all and see it all. I call it an information overload that can make an average healthy American paranoid with tendencies to see our country in total shambles!0 -
I'm 70. I grew up in a "modern" house. We had electric lights and an electric water pump. A LOT of homes where I lived were lighted with kerosene lamps, and you brought a bucket of water from the well or the spring. AND we had a telephone. Party line.
NOW you are considered disadvantaged if you do not have a smart phone and high speed internet. No air conditioning? How crude!
People today are much better off- but it is all a matter of relativity. The world of "Leave it to Beaver" was NOT the average lifestyle. Mom did not cut up chicken wearing a string of pearls.0 -
I am better off now,but I can see where cell phones and computers have made us almost too efficient for our own good.Even with the great advancement in medicine,looks like people are not as healthy as they should be.I see what looks like a majority of young people,especially females,that should be in their prime years,very overweight. 0 -

Life is so much easier now that people have the time and recourses to allow them be total asses anytime and anywhere. We live in a culture where a significant percentage of the population has so little with which to be concerned, they take offense at things that are insignificant at best. These trivialities then become the cause celeb and their feigned offense becomes a reality and a burden upon others.
The bottom line is that things are so good today that people have to go out of their way to find issues, and things are so good that these people have the resources to exploit these issues.
For most of us, we can still go about our lives without too much interference from the anti-liberty folks on both the left and the right. There are times when the social conservatives become sufficiently annoying as to merit a reaction and there are times when their opposites do the same.
We have the perfect opportunity to simply live and let live, but some folks want me to accept and embrace vs. just tolerate lifestyles with which I disagree, and some folks want to impose their false sense of moral superiority upon those that would live such lifestyles.
If it doesn't negatively affect your life, ignore it. If it does, address it. Most of all, be a big enough person to understand that there really is not a hell of a lot that is going to negatively affect your life that is out of your control.0 -
I think it is actually getting better, with pockets of deception.
We have cars that run nearly forever by the early standards.
We have abundant food.
We have communication and information at our fingertips.
Lifespans have increased and quality of life along with it.
And there is much to look forward to. Flying cars, robots, and a host of other sci fi stuff.0 -

I believe the "division" started with Viet Nam. Young people rebelling against the war & the Gov't. Has keep going on and gotten much bigger and more bitter over these many years. High taxes for all the social programs the have been instituted have make it difficult for Mom not to go to work versus staying home and watching over the kids & household. This has been going on 2-1/2 years. NO WAY I've seen anything last as long and increase in intensity every day.
From day one the media has done everything possible to Keep Trump from being elected and now to Destroy Trumps Presidency, or at least that's what I'd thought but no, not everything and with Kavanaugh it's now anyone who agrees with Trump / administration. Including his Deplorable supporters.
BTW: This is the kind of Video you can expect to start seeing from now until the election. Don Lemon with CNN comes off as a real dickweed. Worth watching the entire video.

If a female was molested, the molester might end up short some body parts thanks to the intervention of the female's relatives.

Politicians running for office used to run on a platform each laying out what they can and would do for their constituents and their country. Now they attack each other with keywords to sway the electorate, XYZ is a liar, thief, dishonest, etc.
Term limits would help to a degree but it is not in THEIR best interests to enact that legislation.
There is no logical discourse among people trying to work together to solve issues. Civility has been erased on a national level. The advent of 24 hours news saturation has added to the conflict to an extent, regardless of whether it is Fox or CNN. That is simply a business to gain ad share.
So in that respect, the country is worse off.
I grew up in a small town and on a local level probably not much has changed; people still help their neighbors and listen to each other regardless of political views, working to improve their lot.
Technologically things have improved. Cars are better, communications, food sources improved.0
