Ibuprofen
Sure is getting a lot of bad publicity! I have always considered it a miracle over the counter pain killer. Has taken the place of all of the aspirin type products for me ever since it came out.
I get 800 milligram capsules from the VA and have not taken or needed anything stronger or narcotic for many years. I do not take it every day, just on those few days when my back pain flares up or to counter the side effects from a weekly injection I have been taking for many years.
I sure hope that all of this anti ibuprofen sentiment does not cause the removal of this product from store shelves! I have seen this happen with a lot of medicines over my lifetime.

I used to take aspirin, Goody powders, etc. like candy.
For hangovers, headaches, etc.
Heard that aspirin was bad for your stomach but I?ve never had a problem.
Switched to Advil, Aleve, etc.
Take them as directed for no more three days then abstain for three days.
I?m not a doctor but I drove by a Holiday Inn one day.
For some pain, however, nsaids, aren?t much relief.0 -
i've used ibuprofen for the same back problems, and have heard the warnings. liver damage..etc. i may take it for 2 weeks for the really bad times, but i will abstain for twice that long. i rely on ice therapy more than ibuprofen for anti-immflammation as its more direct, quicker, and usually longer lasting. definitely healthier in the long run than popping pills 0 -
There was a poster a few years back worried about internal bleeding in his eyes, something like "blood shot" eyes.
Turns out he had been taking WAY over the recommended dose/time of aspirin for some kind of pain.
My opinion was he was LUCKY it didn't result in a brain bleed resulting in a stroke and causing permanent damage or even death.
Moral of story, pay attention to maximum dosages, warnings and side effects. Ibuprofen (and related pain relievers) can thin the blood and exceeding dosage/time would not be good.0 -
When I went through my kidney problems earlier this year I could not take Advil. If I did I would immediately start passing blood.
So it was a painful summer and fall for me.0 -
Ibuprofen is abused - over used by many...
Same as aspirin or Tylenol - people take to much to often - without interruption every day...
Can cause all sorts of problems with kidney function or internal bleeding - can cause irreversible damage over time.
Also there are still concerns over ryes syndrome
If you exceed the dosage guidelines / instructions concerning dosage and period and frequency they can cause internal organ failure and death - just because it's over the counter / on the shelf / no scrip required does not mean you can take as much as you want any time you want
I stick with naproxin - it's an anti-inflammatory and reduces swelling and inflammation - usually resulting in less pain
It's the primary active ingredient in aleave and other otc pain remedies

note ..acetaminophen is the only otc that does not act as a blood thinner...but taking to much to long can cause serious problems..had a friend that burnt up his liver with it... 0 -

Better half was prescribed daily Ibu for arthritis, over time it caused an ulcer and she was almost room temp when she got in to Urgent Care. They started IV and transported her ER. Several days in the hospital and no more Ibu ever. All of the nsaids have side effects. Some are deadly, take very sparingly, and at your own peril.
For me acetaminophen does nothing, and it causes liver damage.0 -

In my 40s I was hit by arthritus . the only thing that helped was aspirin 16 to 20 pills a day.Heard all the warnings but I felt the need for pain relief to be worth the risk. Here it is 30 some years later ands till can't find another pain killer as effective.No blood thinning problems 0 -

To thin, you could/will bleed to death, to thick you get blood clots. Many Rat poisons contain warfarin, kills the rats by causing internal bleeding and came into commercial use in 1948.

I have lately been diagnosed with weak kidney function. No special action needed (thanks in advance for your kind thoughts) but they did warn me to stop using NSAIDs because they are very hard on the kidneys.
I've always tolerated aspirin well, and take a baby aspirin every day anyway. I rarely need pain relief, and will be happy with Tylenol or aspirin when I do.0 -
All prescription or over-the-counter medications that increase the risk of bleeding must be avoided without exception prior to surgery near your eye. These medications include aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, coagulants, antiplatelets and many common vitamins and herbal medications.
Did you know that even ONE TABLET of ASPIRIN taken within 2 weeks before surgery or 5 days after surgery, can result in severe bleeding that might result in permanent vision loss?
Avoid using any of these medications unless you are specifically instructed to continue using them by your doctor. Because most anti-inflammatories and pain relievers contain blood thinning agents, these medications should be avoided. The exception is Tylenol (acetaminophen) For pain control, Tylenol is a safe alternative that can be taken at any time before surgery.
Tylenol can/will cause kidney damage if taken above the recommended daily dose. Do not use more than 10 days w/o asking doctor.

I'm having a cataract out on Monday, and in my pre-op consultation last week, they specifically told me that I did NOT have to stop taking my daily mini-aspirin. 0 -

Just a side note for you us55840, never worry about your ibuprofen expiration dates on those massive VA bottles! The ones I am currently taking should have gone bad way back in August of 2013.[:0]
They still work just fine for my needs so far and I have a few other bottles on tap that they sent me automatically without my asking.
I only usually take just one pill a week. Once in a while I take another when my back flairs up.0 -
