Back in the fifties no boom trucks only climbers with saddles did the trimming some of the trees were super tall in this area--oaks-maples-etc. Friend of mine was very good climber one day he came down after a rough high climb, looked at the boss and said Strving shove your job damn birds are flying below me not one even or above me. I am very experienced with chain saws. I have built 7 custom log cabins and the chain saw is roaring all day long during construction.
Also have cut a lot of firewood.
Also, I have whacked more than 100 tall trees, to get the good view from my mountaintop getaway. I have two Sthil and one Husqvarna, that saw cost $630.
But no way I am going 90 feet up in a tree and cutting with a chain saw.
My fiancee has 5 rental houses and I have often sat and watched the tree guys, climbing those trees with the little Stihl hanging off their belt with a little cable, it gives me the creeps just to watch 'em climb.
Never saw an accident but you can tell how dangerous it is, the guy is 75 feet up, leaning back into his harness, and sawing off the top 15 feet of the tree! Damn.
God bless the guys who have the guts to climb and cut but no way I am gonna do it.0 -

When I was on I-I Duty We had a Topper in our platoon of reserves. This guy smoked more than I did and that was a lot. But he was the fastest 3 mile runner the Platoon had.
Think it was from all the hills he climbed daily. But if we had a job that required you to climb he was our guy..0 -
I hired a guy again this year to trim off the 7' seed pods and remove a few fronds from our queen palms.
They've gotten too tall to trim with a pole saw, and I'll probbaly kill myself if I tried climbing them and trimming with a Sawzall...0 -

My brother is 68, he has a girlfriend and he always wants to be the Knight in Shining Armor.
I have a pole saw, a 10 foot fiberglass pole with a saw on the end, you can extend it out where it is 17 feet long. I let brother borrow it a month ago but he didn't say what for.
Last week he showed me what he did. This was at girlfriend's rental house. He got up to the top of a 10 foot step ladder, extended the pole saw all the way, and was cutting pine branches off 25 feet high.
Good God, dangerous for the 25 year old, suicide for the old guy!
I told him that he was a fool! And he couldn't borrow my saw any more. If the gal can afford to own and manage a rental she can afford to hire a tree professional to do that high altitude stuff.
But, my brother always wants to be the Knight in Shining Armor.

I worked in sawmills in Louisa County in Va. during summer vacation in high school. I have cut a lot of timber in my 75 years.
Grandpa worked in sawmills his whole life. He was snaking logs with mule in the 50's and got in yellow jackets which stung him and mule terrible. Mule took off running and low tree limb knocked him off mule. His left leg got hung up in traces(chains run back to timber hooks) and mule dragged him through brush. Seven broken ribs, punctured lung, broken arm and deep cuts in skull. He almost died from infection and laid in bed taped up in that hot humid Va. weather for almost one and a half years. I worshiped the ground he walked on and gave my son his name.
Was a saw miller by the name of Luther Sims in Louisa Co and mom went to school with his wife I believe. He was cutting huge oak and tree broke the wrong way. He ran backwards and a piece of rusty barb wire(old homestead) got him about knee level and he went down. Huge limb hit Luther in head and he went into a coma. Everybody prayed for Luther but life was not in the cards for Luther. He died after being in a coma for over two years. He left a wife and 5 or 7 kids, I forget exact number.
I usually cut down trees by myself at my Va. property but i am not a climber. For climbing I usually call on Nick Smith in Kent's Store, Va. Nick is a real comedian at times and a rising country music star. He plays and sings local and in Nashville. Sometimes if he is working for you and in the right mood he will sing away 90 feet up. He has a scar from breast bone to you know where, where a chain saw got him and opened him up in a tree. I am rooting for you Nick if you are out there and good luck in Nashville.
I have had some close calls with saws and timber but always equated cutting timber with motorcycles in my early years. You have to have a healthy respect for them or they will kill you in a heart beat.

I had a Tree business for almost 13 years and never received any serious injury's, but was always getting banged up. I got tired of it and "Hung" it up. For some reason, today, I am afraid of high heights!
I guess the good money overcame the fear.[;)]0
