Poachers! Update...
They were Poachers! A Wildlife Cop is on his way down here to Vegas to take a report from me.
My Wife and I went camping up in central Nevada. Pulling into where I like to camp, there was a truck and large horse trailer parked with no one around.
The next day 4 guys with 6 horses came down the canyon. The first guy had an Elk head tied to the back of his horse. It still had Velvet on the horns! Two of the pack horses were loaded down with the meat and one of the other riders had some more on his horse.
As they road past our camp site I said, "You got one Huh"! I think they got two, a Bull and a Cow. One of the guys said, "Yea, it took us almost a week".
We got home today and I checked the NDOW website for hunting dates and Depredation hunts. There are none in that area. They got away without me getting a plate number, so it looks like they will get away with it, and the only thing I can do when I report them is to say Nevada is now two Elk Short.[:(!]

I'm going to call NDOW Monday to make sure, but from what I am seeing on they're Web Site, they're is nothing going on in that area.0 -

There was an early Depredation Hunt in units 101-103 that I saw, and we were in unit 173. Quite a ways off.
And the Antlers still had Velvet on them.0 -

They actually parked and hunted 173. They said they got them at the very top of Ark Dome which is in 173. 101-103 is closer to the Utah border so with Utah tags, I'm guessing that they were from there.
I really don't know if they Poached them or not but if they did, they took away from other Hunters. It is very hard to draw a tag for Elk in Nevada.
I was always under the impression that if you took a Deer/Elk that still had velvet, it was to early in the season. I learned something new!0 -
I'd think it would be pretty dumb to come bopping into a trailhead with poached elk when a single rider could have gone in front and made sure it was clear. 0 -

They were pretty darned brazen with the project. Keep in mind that a headquarters office dweeb might not know about certain "out-of-season" permits.
In 2017, I was shooting muskrats and beavers on a permit issued by DNR and was "turned in" via TIPS hotline. Local bunny cop made the obligatory investigation even though he already knew (the "uniformed" side of the conservation dept had been notified)there was a permit issued at the state level. He also had the list of permitted shooters. He was quite interested in how well I was doing and that I had kept a tally sheet on my numbers.
Anyhoo, he wasn't sure if there was a way to filter such permitted "off season" shooting through the department TIPS system but he wasn't wasting another trip on this one and I didn't see him again.0 -

Not everyone can "buy" a tag. Not saying it wasn't wrong. To me it's like astrophysics. I suppose it's out there but it's something I can't grasp. Since I ain't gonna hump all them thar hills to drag out a thousand pound of funky meat.
I'd keep an eye out for (what was that on an episode of "Longmire" with the taxidermist's wife who had cancer?) on Craig slist.0 -

Not sure why you thought it would go three. Most hunters hate poachers, but at least in NM, we rarely see Game and Fish in the field checking licenses. So they did bad, and they got away to poach another day. To bad, but 3 pages, what is to say?0 -

That is very brazen poaching. They must not have been worrying about getting caught.
I never hunted in NV but I have hunted all around the West and NW. My experience is the Game Wardens are out in force and very active, especially in MT and ID.
I really don't like poachers they ruin a lot of hunting for the legal sportsman.0 -
I followed this guy about half way through Nevada about five years ago this same time of year. Doesn't look like he trying to hide the fact that he has a fresh kill.

The first Warden that I talked to got hung up in Court and couldn't come and get my report.
Today, I got a call from another one who happens to be the head of something like 7 States! He's calling Utahs Game wardens to see if they can catch them.
He also told me to call him the next time I put in for a Tag so he could tell me what area to put in for and where to go![;)]0 -

This place is pretty remote.
Hell, when I was hunting there a couple of years ago, I saw a car coming up the road in a hurry. He stopped, jumped out, and started masturbating right on the road!!! I was camoed out and walking less than 100 yards from him and he never saw me!0 -

Or like anybody would have a phone camera these days. I would guess that to unpack and load out a few mules onto a trailer would take at least an hour, maybe two. Yep probably not enough time to get involved.
Just some locals doing what they have been doing for, well years. This time of year especially with all the fires cooking all the wildlife maybe just wanted to get a head start and spoil some meat before the fires burn them up.0 -
