Appliances??? Gas or electric???

Sold the house and bought another one./ Need to buy some appliances as
we left the old ones with the house. Can use either gas or electric.
Which would you prefer and why. Never used gas before. House is heated with gas hot water baseboard.

    Don?t know about water heater or dryer as all I ever had were electric . When I remarried 20 years ago and bought a house the stove was/ is gas . Best cooking appliance ever . Will never go back to electric

    IMO, depends on your electric and gas rates. At our deercamp, "rolling mansion" it's all electric and the rates are high since it's a co-op. I have Ameren at my house and the rates are quite good.
    Electric is a "cleaner" energy and safer imo. These new electric and gas furnaces, appliances are much more efficient than what you had,

    Gas is the stove of choice as the heat is more even, electric cycles on & off. I don't think the other appliances matter so much, whatever is cheaper to run.

    I think about ice storms, where electric may be off for several days and I have to live off a generator.

    Been through a couple severe ice/snow storms and electric was off during one for like 28 days straight.

    Had to operate the well pump from emergency gen.
    Had gas stove, hot water heater, gas and wood heat.

    All electric would have been troublesome.

    I believe all modern gas stoves will have an electric safety & so unless you know how to bypass it gas will not help in an outage. They also no longer have pilot lights.
    Electric stoves can be dangerous in that they may be hot & you can't see it & you can burn yourself on them. For me the big difference is that I can work on gas stoves & other appliances easier.

    i use gas for heat and cooking. i hope to never have to trade my gas stove for an electric. gas has much better control over burner temp.

    gas is always cheaper and more efficient?than gas, and better for cooking.

    Good point about modern gas ranges.


    Emergency Generator can get 120v to a gas stove for electric safety control turn on to get a warm a meal or too melt snow whereas a electric range is usually too heavy a electric load on a small emergency gen.

    Gas for cooking. Infinite heat control is the biggest convenience. Gas hot water too. You may eventually want to switch to tankless. As far as chlothes dryers go, I think electric has the edge on gas. They dry chlothes and don't use a flame, are simple to repair, don't produce CO. Just my opinion. Make sure you have your boiler serviced by a reputable professional before the heating season starts. Save your reciept. Don't lose it. Ask the service guy about things you can do yourself, keep an eye on. Like bleeding the lines, pressure limits and switches, circuation pump oiling, you know, the basics.

    The ultimate range would be 2 gas burners, 2 induction burners with an electric oven. A center gas bacon griddle if possible.

    Gas sucks the big one for baking, but awesome for many stove top masterpieces.

    I have not used an induction, but most rave about them.

    Gas dryer is the best, as the flames dry better than electric element.

    Gas Hot tub and sauna. Electric fridge and dish washer.

    and a fireplace that actually burns wood etc.

    I have electric...we have an LP furnace (NG not available here) for when it's below 40, but LP is too pricey and limited to have on my other appliances. How long are you intending to be the house? Gas appliances tend to be much more expensive than electric to purchase.

    Gas.
    Electric here was out for 11 days.
    Still had NG.
    Wires above grade wind wiped out - gas below- still flowed.

    I always want a gas stove for cooking and gas water heater, in this house we also have gas clothes dryer.

    As for cook stoves not working with electric, I can just light the burners with a match if needed. Not sure if I could make the oven part work.

    Gas cooktop, electric stove.

    Elec. stoves maintain their temps better, but gas ranges allow immediate temp changes and are easier to cook on.

    I say gas, when we remodeled we installed a commercial kitchen and exhaust hood.

    With gas you have so many more options on how to cook. I can go from a low simmer to a very high temp for my wok, a gas stove has that range of options.

    I have never seen a commercial kitchen with electric stoves.

    I also use gas for heat and have an on demand gas hot water heater.

    Gas for furnace, stove, and hot water.
    Electric for dryer and oven.
    Ideally you'd use solar to pre-heat hot water and the gas to keep it up to temp.

    I sure its not the same everywhere but I just went online and checked Lowes, for a Whirlpool range gas and electric where the same price. LG gas was close to $2,000 and electric was $180.00 more just over $2,100.
    I only compared the first two I found that where the same except how they provided heat.

    No question, gas.

    Stove? Instant hot, better control of the heat for cooking.
    Hot water? Usually cheaper.
    Dryer? Same; usually cheaper.

    I don't know that many people, but I don't know anyone who PREFERS electric appliances if given a choice. Usually they choose electric because their house is not plumbed for gas.

    We have a propane heater, generator and BBQ connected to a 350 lb tank. When the electricity goes off, you'll be glad that you're "cooking with gas."
