The Smoking Squirrel Incident
About an hour ago, there was a large boom and the power instantly went out. A quick survey proved that the breaker on the power pole transformer in my back yard had popped. I had two guesses: either the 35-yo transformer had shorted internally, or the cute little squirrel who has been industrially stashing walnuts in my neighbor's yard shed had very suddenly lost any need of all that winter larder.
It wasn't the transformer.

Happened to me about 10 years ago.
I found the culprit on the ground by the power pole.
One side of the tree rat was perfect.
The other side was charcoal[:D]
Powerline guy said they had special leads that started giving the critter a charge when they started nibbling but before they could short out the line.0 -
same thing here friday about noon, loud boom, no power. went outside and looked at transformer and there he was, a very dead looking squirrel. happens here about every 12 to 16 months, last time was easter day. 0 -
Had that happen once but it was a Raccoon,he lost a lot of hair and im glad it didnt start a grass fire. 0 -
Major problem in Guam with the brown tree snakes. They conduct REAL good when shorting out the HV side of a transformer. 0 -
Yep them tree rats cause problems a lot, a nice cool morning and boom you got outages and dead squirrels [:(!][:D]
