OK, it's the gun.
My new (to me) Gov't Model 45 won't feed worth squat. Slide fails to close 50-75% of the time. Tried 4 different magazines with no improvement. Tried factory ammo and it was worse with the factory stuff than it was with my reloads, nearly 100% failure.
Someone suggested the extractor was too tight. Did some research and that is a likely culprit. Watched a couple videos on Youtube and tried to correct the problem. I hat doing home gun smithing because I am no damn good at it and most times I break something or at least make it worse. I finally managed to get that thing back together ('Series '80 safety not helping things). I don't know if I did any good. I'll shoot it one more time. If problem persists I'll have to try to find a local smith. I haven't found a good one around here.

maybe try some dummy rounds thru it see if it will work just manual operating the slide maybe you can find a rough spot ?
just me I let the slide pick it up at release speed and maybe just slowly let it forward hopefully you can find the problem

Can't see the cartridge, the slide is just short of closing. I can push it shut with my thumb. Ammo was my reloads with a 200 grain lead RN and Remington 230 grain FMJ RN.
According to the instructional videos an empty case should just stay in place when slipped under the extractor. Mine is very tight and I have to force the case to go in place. I really think the folks saying the extractor is too tight are on this one. It feels very tight to me.
Fires and ejects flawlessly. Feeding...not so much.0 -

Sounds like my experience with my "New" ATI Commander. I've been pretty much disgusted with it. Several types of magazines tried, including Wilson Combat. (230gr. Round nose.) If it fires three shots without jamming, its a miracle.
Only "New" gun I've ever had that would not function. Was so disheartened/disgusted, I've not tried a single round through my also "New" ATI USGI. (Matching handguns.) One Commander mdl./one Full size.0 -
I'm far from a 1911 expert, though I carried one for years. Since he says he can push it closed with thumb pressure, I'm surprised nobody has suggested checking the recoil spring. A used gun could have had the proper spring replaced with who knows what.And a super easy fix. 0 -

As they say in Rome NY for some reason, "Not for nothing" but to start off let me say I am no Gunsmith and know nothing about 1911's totally defer to those who build and fix them.
I do know that I had two small 380's one a Ruger LCP and one a Taurus TCP and both tended to fail to close fully after a round was fired and a new round attempted to chamber. I could use the heel of my hand to tap the slide forward and fire. This occurred more with hollow points than FMJ.
After possibly mucking things up by lightly polishing the feed ramp they both reliably feed all the rounds now. FWIIW0
