The intended purpose was to make an efficient round that would still be super sonic, out to 2000 yards, that one did not have to replace the barrel every 1000 rounds. This rifle will run a 140 grain Berger VLD Hybrid at 3200 FPS, while operating at a reduced operating pressure of 55,000PSI, as compared to 65,000 for the parent case, or the belted magnums. What is barrel life? I would assume 700-900 rds? I'm a 6.5 fan, but currently happy with my Lapua. 0 -

You understand incorrectly. It is lots of plasma from high pressures, and shooting a bore dirty and hot that erodes the throat of a barrel. Plasma is created by over bore cartridges, and the more severely over bore the more plasma. This round was designed to be run at 55,000 psi, not the 65,000 psi of the parent case. It uses @5% less powder than the 264 Winchester, and achieves 100-200 fps higher velocity, due to efficiency, and new powders(H-1000 for example in this case). Using 61.0 grains behind a 140 grain Berger Hybrid, I am seeing just under 3200 fps. 26" barrel, BTW.
If we had the powders back then, that we have today, the 264 Winchester, and 220 Swift would not have gotten those reputations.
As for speed, 3200 fps is nothing. The 223 Remington gets that with a 55 grain bullet, and over 3600 with a 40 grain bullet. My favorite deer hunting load for my 300 Win Mag early Stainless A-Bolt is a 130 grain Barnes XLC(blue coated, and out of production now), on top of 81 grains of Winchester 760. Out of the 26" barrel it is kicking the clock at 3700 fps, and it is a safe, under maximum load for that rifle. Have over 100 of those rounds thru it, with no signs of throat erosion. However, I do not prairie dog hunt with it either.0 -
That's awesome. I hope to get 3000 out of my 6.5x47 Lapua. The difference between 3200 fps, and 2631 (avg velo my Lapua) Is amazing. I'm shooting 140 Berger VLD Hunting Bullets, and the drop @ 1000 yards is around 33 feet, IIRC. 0 -

I can get between 3400-3500 fps if I want to load it to 65,000 psi...but that was not the design intent. If was, I would have gone with the 26 Nosler. I'm also using the 140 Berger Hybrid Hunting bullet.
Look at the 6.5 PRC...basically the same cartridge with a slightly different case, instead of using the Short Action Ultra Mag case, they used the Ruger Compact Magnum case. Same design intent, run at lower pressures with slower burning powder, and because of case efficiency, get higher velocity, coupled with longer barrel life.0
