Young people know it all
The first gun I ever bought was a Winchester 37A 12 ga, 30" full choke when I was about 16. I gave $72 for it. I had a kick pad on it before I even brought it home.
The gunsmith that ordered it for me (a WWI vet famous for custom made stocks) tried really hard to get me to take the box. I didn't need the box. Who would put their meat on the table gun in a box?

40 years ago I stored all my long gun and pistol boxes in my Mom's basically empty basement.
I had not visited her in a month or so back in 1978 due to excessive holiday overtime , no days off work issues. When I did get there ,I also went to retrieve a box for a rifle I had just agreed to trade for a shotgun....NO Boxes at all in her basement.
I carefully asked what happened, she explained the empty boxes were useless garbage and she was spring cleaning, put them out in last weeks trash pick-up, didn't think I mind.
I gently explained why they were not garbage and she told me ok, I'll remember that for the future. BIG SIGH !
My bad, I never kept anything there again, just in case spring cleaning came around again.0 -
Much to my wife's dismay, I keep boxes for everything, collectable or not. I have a rack in our garage with all of the vintage stereo components that I've replaced over the years, but held on to, still in their original boxes, even the Marantz 4400 that I bought when I left Japan in 1975 and had shipped back to the states.
All of my 50's Lionel Train collection is in their original boxes.
Sadly, most of my guns came without their boxes. [V]0 -
Yep, those boxes just seem to get away from us all the time. Dad thought I should have his unfired Texas Commemorative 94 Winchester just before he passed away seven years ago. He picked it up in Texas and brought it home to Virginia. I asked him where the box was. He said "why would I want the box? I took it out to the garden and burned it up."
Couple years after Dad passed I saw the box/sleeve and paperwork being sold on Flea Bay separately. After a lot of haggling I convinced fella to sell me everything with a buy it now.
Darn box and paperwork cost me more than Dad paid for the gun brand new.
I collect and restore 37 Winchesters and the old colored boxes with the shocks of wheat and quail flying away are worth more than some of the '37's that go in them.0 -
I saved all of the boxes I bought in High School and college in my dads store storage unit. Found out about 2 months ago all were destroyed with water damage. 0
