HVAC Fixed
Picked up a 440 volt 25 -5 capacitor at the local HVAC suppy store. Didn't work until we put in 2 new fuses just ahead of the condenser then it kicked in. Cost me a total of $60. 34 year old Carrier AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.[:)][:)][:)]

They did make some of the first AC units or maybe the first. 0 -
Okay. So the 2 fuses. Did you replace existing fuses or did you do this on advice of someone with experience. My a/c died and I haven't got it out of the window yet. That'll happen thursday. I've got casement windows. Lowe's and Home Depot sell just one unit for casements. Frigidaire. Exactly like the one I have. 0 -

There was 240 at the box but only 99 volts getting to the AC unit. The only thing between the 2 were the fuses and the wiring. Besides they were pretty crusty and you could turn one of the ends.0 -

Actually there are a good number of fair, and honest HVAC contractors out there. As with anything, the bad taint the good,.....that happens a lot in your profession too, right?
While it's great to do a simple repair yourself, there are PLENTY of things that can happen with a modern heat pump system that the average Joe couldn't figure out, much less fix on their own.
Things as always, are a two way street. You should see some of the dregs of the earth I have dealt with back in the days I did residential service, and the lies they would tell you to try and get repairs for free, or service at midnight for their 'sick child' who you find running around barefoot in thirty degree weather when you arrive at 1AM.[xx(] So yea,...I guess I was a 'suckah' as you put it.0 -

I was not implying any dishonesty on the part of HVAC guys. The reality is even the most honest ones are going to charge for an emergency service call, on a week end. That service charge is going to be more than what he paid to fix it himself. So it was a win for him. I think you misinterpreted my comment, it was congratulating him on saving money not impugning HVAC guys for billing. If I were in HVAC, plumbing or electrician I'd charge too for having to respond on an emergency over a week end too.[;)]0 -

I did some research on this over the weekend and the repair bills to fix this problem ranged from $150 - $400 just for the service call and to replace the capacitor.0 -
I have no doubt...likely $400 or more here. 0 -
Heck,...I don't blame you guys at all for fixing it yourself. I do that with everything possible.
I just don't do major vehicle repairs anymore since my back got so bad. Fortunately I have a friend that owns his own shop, and is ASE Master status. He saves me a lot of money, and he saves a lot on his AC repairs if you know what I mean.[:D]
