Computer Information/Advice Sought

Looking at Dell refurbs on Dell's site. Good prices.

All have operating systems. Some have Windows 7 Professional. Some have Windows 8 Professional. Some have Windows 8.1 Professional. And some have Windows 10 Professional.

I currently use Windows 7 Professional and like it. I installed a program that kept it from upgrading to Windows 10.

I don't hear anything good about Windows 10, but what about Windows 10 Professional?

I don't hear anything at all about Windows 8. I didn't even know it was a thing.

Which would you go with?

    Apple iPad ... I bought a Pc about a year ago and I was full of ransom ware the day I turned it on. PCs just hold no appeal anymore. Apple software is bulletproof. Have you ever tried a iPad?

    I have to agree with Roswell and forge. Look into a macbook or an iMac. I went to a MacBook about 7 years ago and have not looked back.

    You will pay a bit more up front, but I have not had to do anything other than upgrade the OS whenever they updated theirs. Oh and the Apple OS upgrades are FREE.

    I have to use Windows (currently Win10 Professional) at work as it is what the DoD uses. It is not terrible, but I have much less problems with my Mac as I do with the Windows.

    I do have Windows Office for Mac on mine as I work on things in my spare time and email back to the office.

    Windows 8 is geared toward use on a tablet or smartphone, and with touchscreen capability. much of the interface is used by tapping on stuff. when you have it on a desktop computer trying to use a mouse, it's clumsy and it becomes obvious it is better suited for tablets.

    most people are evenly divided between Windows 7 and Windows 10. nobody prefers Windows 8.

    Windows 10 is like 8 but more friendly toward desktop computers and mouses. it has some advanced features compared to Win7 or Win8 but not much.

    according to Wikipedia the difference between Home and Pro is that Pro has BitLocker, Device Guard, Windows Update for Business, and the ability to join a domain. if you don't use those you won't miss them at all; if you use it for a business you might go with Pro because it is a little more secure.

    Windows 7 Pro and Ultimate also have BitLocker, the ability to join a domain, and additional security.

    the problem with Windows 10, a major problem, is that it doesn't update itself with patches, hotfixes and Service Packs like all previous versions of Windows did. instead it continually updates "itself" as if transmogrifying into something else. this results in continuous data usage, frequent reboots, much crashing and sometimes the loss of all your data, which is a Very Bad Thing.

    since there are no Service Packs, if/when you have to reinstall Windows 10 you have to re-download the most recent version (free) unless you want to use your original Windows Media and let it re-download all the update material.

    on the other hand when you install Windows 7 you still have to know where to get all the update material. that is not as user-friendly as simply getting the latest iteration of Windows 10. if you do use Windows 7, look for the "Media Refresh" install disk and get the "Windows Rollup" service pack that they put out every 6 months in March and September and keep a copy of those for yourself on DVD. you can't do that with Windows 10.

    what would I go with? proof is in the pudding. I use Windows 7. Home, Pro or Ultimate would depend on your networking and security needs.

    i too have been looking for a new one new dell 12g memery 1td hard drive window 10 64bit 500.00 to replace my 2003 xp that is not supported any more i figured i will buy it and play with it before unleash it onto the web,might as well learn the new?

    You have 2 more years before Microsoft ends support for Windows 7.

    The specific end of support day for Windows 7 will be January 14, 2020. After that, technical assistance and automatic updates that help protect your PC will no longer be made available for the product. Microsoft strongly recommends that you move to Windows 10 sometime before January 2020 to avoid a situation where you need service or support that is no longer available.

    I have both Windows 7 Pro, and Window 10, and still prefer windows 7, although 10 is not terrible.

    Due to the end of support for 7 coming up, (as mentioned above), you may want to base your choice on that. I wouldn't be surprised if MS ends up bumping that date out a year or so as they have done in the past with other OSs.
