Solid State hard drive (SSD) --what a difference
Wife gave me a SSD for my 8 yo puter for Christmas. Installed it, used data migration software to clone my old hard drive to the SSD. Perfect transfer--lost absolutely nothing.
Faster, no noise, no heat, more reliable and more efficient. As prices of the SSD's fall, eventually all new computers will have SSD's rather than the outdated mechanical hard drives.

Same impression here. I retired an ancient desktop and got a refurb with an SSD as replacement. YUUUUUGE (as the Donald would say it) difference. No constant whine, no loud fan, no clicking, and nearly instantaneous reads. Just wow.
Edit to add: External SSD drives are now dirt cheap. You can get a terabyte drive the size of a cigarette pack for about $50. Perfect for backups.0 -

I'd buy a external 1TB SSD for USB 3.0/2.0 right now for $50 if there was a link. Maybe pay more.
This seem to be a relative low price for a name brand 500GB internal SSD.

That's the exact SSD (Samsung EVO 860) that I installed in my computer except mine is 250GB. Don't need any larger.0 -

bought my daughter a computer for college a couple of years ago. pretty new "(a least to me) technology then. the thing works great for all the reasons you stated, seems to b the way to go. 0 -

I purchased a new Dell 3 weeks ago with the SSD drive. Dell 2 in 1, AMD Ryzen 7 - 12GB Memory - AMD Radeon RX Vega 10 - 256GB Solid State Drive.
I used to blame a lot of slow stuff on my internet connection with AT&T but it was my old computer that was slow. This thing is instant. I turn it on and it's up and on the internet in less than 15 seconds. I don't even have to sign in, it has face recognition.0 -
Posting from my laptop that has a 500GB SSD. Love it and as described above it is fast, quiet and reliable. Also some security features built in to the apple SSDs so it is easy to make the data unavailable vs a standard hard drive where you have to rewrite over everything a number of times to "erase" the data. 0 -

We are starting to see SSD's in the recycling stream now. We are going to have to invest in new destruction equipment to handle the upcoming changeover to SSD. Our degaussing and crushing equipment is not up to NIST standards for SSD destruction. They want the drives ground up to almost dust.
We have destroyed over 10,000 drives in 2018 alone and next year is starting to look like even more.0 -
