Older Lincoln....what is this

Late 70,s Lincoln continental. On the side of the air filter cover there is what looks like an oil filter mounted on the side. Is this part of an oil bath filter system? I know its factory because ive looked up pics and they have the same thing. Its the 460 engine. Just curious.

    Post a picture, I used to always drive to Lincoln's. So did my parents, I did have a 78 and 79 Lincoln. But again you need to post a picture so I can see what you're talking about

    No, Looks just like an oil filter. even says motorcraft on the bottom of it. I thought it was something just added. But looked up some pics of the same motor, and it has it on there too.

    Kind of like a muffler. Or more likely like a suppressor...

    The 460 required a lot of air at throttle and intake makes noise just like exhaust to some extent. The Lincoln was considered a luxury car and the typical buyers weren't interested in something that sounded like a Hemi. They tried SOMEWHAT successfully to baffle the drone.
