Dillion 650XL
I'm thinking about buying a 650XL and want to know what the guys that have them can tell me about the extras available.
What do you feel is a must? I currently reload but only single stage for rifle and im shooting a lot more pistol now than i did before.

I reload 1,500- 2,000 rounds of 9mm on a Dillon 650XL per month.
My best friend is doing the same.

The Dillon unit is nicer and faster but his works just fine.
The strongmount is really nice to have as is the roller handle- both of those just make the press work better when pumping out large quantities of ammo.
I have a standard Dillon single case gauges but my next money will be on a larger one, that you can drop 100 bullets in at once. They are about $100.
Lots of people say buy the powder checker, I run power pistol amd have never had an issue, but i know I need to buy the powder checker- its about $80.
With the 650 everything just runs smoother with clean brass- i changed to wet tumbling with steel pins. But prior to doing that my friends always gave me a hard time for being that guy with dirty brass.
There are other upgrades you can make and I am sure I will in time. I already had the roller handle and strong mount when i moved from the 550 to the 650- but my friend doesnt have the roller handle amd im glad I do.
Im saving my pennies for a Mr Bullet feeder as well- its a want, not a need.

I have had my 650 for about 20 years and love it. I added the case feeder, roller handle and strong mount. I load 5.56, .308, .45, 9mm, and have done many thousands of rounds with it.
If you have any trouble with it or break any parts Dillon will take care of you. They have knowledgeable people to answer questions about any problems you might encounter. Dillon machines are tough and seldom break but its nice to know they have a bullet proof warranty.0 -
I have one too. You can buy after market die holders on fleabay or better yet www.GunBroker.com along with powder die bodies. Once you have dies set up correctly for each caliber loaded you will be able to change calibers a lot faster. I recommend the additions of the roller type tooling modofications available. I also recommend a second powder measure one for pistol the other for rifle powders. The case feeder is a must have in my book.
Yea, after it was all said and done I had invested about 2 grand but find it well worth it for producing excellent ammo.0 -

I have the 550 and it is a great machine I can reload a lot of rounds.
If I had do buy a new Dillion I would get the 650XL it had some additional assecories that I wish I had.0 -
I have been reloading with my 650, had it for about 10 years now.
I normally load in quantity one to three thousand of a caliber [ currently 6] at a time for hand guns a few times a year as needed to keep shooting stock range ready so anything that makes reloading safer, faster, cleaner, easier or more enjoyable makes sense to me.
Last year I bought an after market upgrade kit to make it cycle much smoother , no longer have any snap in the cases moving from station to station and virtually zero powder loss.
Included were a roller cam follower, a shell plate bearing kit , roto-cam actuator bearing that smoothly rotates the shell plate, and a case feed stop and primer feed stop which still allows working the press without one or both of the feeders working.
The kit cost about $100. from a seller on fleabayy called snowshooze up in Alaska, he is not a seller on GB.
The 650 now performs effortlessly, smooth as silk, sure it was excellent in stock form, but now it is fantastic.
It was well worth the cost and the time it took to properly install and adjust the components. While the stock 650 is excellent, the upgrades have made it FANTASTIC.0 -
It is a good press if you shoot a lot. IMHO, Dillon is king of the progressives and what every progressive reloader wants. Been using Dillon equipment for 35 years.
550, 650, and 1050s depending on how much you shoot.
I see people go cheap and buy Lee progressives and later regret their purchase and try to get rid of them shortly after. Not disparaging Lee because they do make good products but their progressives are junk.0 -
I'm a member of the buy once cry once club. I spec'd out a XL650 with case feeder and bullet feeder and all the bells and whistles set up in 9mm for $1700ish which I don't think is to bad for the machine you're getting. I will probably not do rifle rounds on it because of the way I like to inspect everything at every step because I load for accuracy.
I'm going to pull the trigger on it within a month or so.0 -
