My Information Was Hacked

I got a letter yesterday saying my name, social security number and financial account information was obtained by a phishing attack.

They offered me 12 months of credit monitoring free at mytrueidenty.

What would the best thing for me to do?

    Find a way to verify that the letter is not a scam itself.

    Did they provide your own personal info to you or are they just saying that they have it?

    contact your finacial institue and ask them if it is a scam or not, local banks/credit unions have seen it all

    I received an email from someone who said he was in China and that he had used the camera on my computer to record me whacking off to a porn site.

    A few things wrong with the scenario:


    I don't watch porn.

    I don't whack off to porn.

    I don't have cameras on any of my computers.

    I deleted the email.

    If he had stated that he had my name, SS number and information regarding my accounts, I would have treated the email the same way.

    The fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

    Appears you HAVE NOT HAVE BEEN a victim of phishing, but answer that letter and YOU MIGHT become a victim. [:D]

    Being a letter and not e-mail I would check it out before discounting it,,when equifax was hacked I was one of the 150 million that my data was stolen,,within a month both my credit cards had been breached and a loan taken out in my name in New Mexico,,Equifax fixed it all for me at no charge and I now have a credit block on my name with a pin number to use if needed
