    I had a 30 year old B&D that worked great, but finally wore out; two bought since then weren't good. B&D is now just another conglomerate.

    I now use a Shark, which seems to be the most powerful rechargeable one available. But, it's no match for an AC powered shop vac.

    I got one about 2 years ago. I bought it because I was tired of dragging my big vacuum up and down the stairs while vacuuming them.

    Mine is a "Cordless" it has a cord to recharge the battery.

    They are kind of spendy but these are really top notch quality. I have 2 golden Retriever and the bring in dirt and shed so there is hair and dirt on the steps.

    The Topdog cleans it up fast and is easy to use. It has 2 speeds/power levels and on max power the battery lasts about 10min. What I really like is it has a rotating power brush that really gets up dirt and hair and its easy to clean up.

    Had/have a Ryobi unit. Worked great until all my Ryobi batteries crapped out. Have to go get a few more 18V packs. No Home Depots anywhere close.

    Gave up on cordless. We cat sit for a friend who has been through 4 in the last 6 years. We have a small hand held Hoover which is corded and has been going strong for 10 years. A bit less convenient, but it does pick up hairs and other large particles the cordless cannot pick up.

    Switch to Rigid, even the batteries are guaranteed for life.
