Anyone remember the Iranian revolution?
It was 1979. I had a 1969 El Camino with the bumper sticker "I don't brake for Iranians." This was after the U.S. Embassy was seized and the personnel were taken hostage.
One night I was driving past the university and two Iranian men (easy to spot them as they always walked with an arrogant stroll) walked across the street in front of me. These bast... um,guys always had this "mine don't stink" attitude of superiority and they just assumed I would yield for them. Wrong.
I hit the gas and roared at them. I didn't steer to hit them, I just held my place in my lane as they walked into it. At the last second they jumped forward and I missed them by a coat of paint.
Lots of the bast... um, Iranians attended the university. Ironic that the address was Shaw Avenue.

In 1978 at the college I attended, the Iranian students (called themselves Persians) were protesting against the Shah. Their placards denounced him and his government with swastikas.
I remember how many of them drove 455HO Trans Ams and Firebirds. All top of the line cars with T-tops. I doubt seriously after their revolution any of them were driving Trans Ams back in Iran.0 -

Went to community college with a ?Persian? named Ahmed. He could drink beer with the best of us and took his turn on the bong.

I was in gradeschool. at the beginning of the hostage crisis, the AM radio station our family listened to had some man from the government taking calls from the public about it.
he was saying the 'hostages' weren't being held captive, they could be released at any time, maybe in a few days or next week.
I called up and said "if they can't leave, aren't they hostages?"
he said oh no, they might be released very soon. they're not hostages.
always struck me as odd not only that that they would have someone from the gov't answering questions but also giving such a line of bs.0 -

We have a town in Western Wyoming called "Bondurant", during that time, some enterprising young individuals creatively using paint changed it to read.

In 1976 I was in college with a couple of Iranian guys, we were on the soccer team together.
Reza and Jhivad, they were brothers. This was one of the things I loved about playing soccer you always met some interesting foreigners.
Reza and Jhivad were planning to go back to Iran after graduation, they spoke of how you had to be careful what you said about the Shah, the Shah was a real bad ass.
I left town a year later and lost touch with my Iranian buddies, who could have foreseen the Revolution that would take their country over just a few years later. I wonder what became of my Iranian buddies.0 -

I never worked or knew any Iranians but did work with a Pakistani for several years. Israr Kahn thought I was a northern hillbilly. I thought he was some kind of exiled royalty.
His nose was always uppity as was his demeanor.0 -
Not trying to change the subject but do any of you remember Carter's failed rescue attempt of the US hostages in Iran?
Several good men died that day and it made for an easy win for our next President of these here United States!0 -

Small world (or who the F is 'Shaw'?). The main 'road' though Michigan State University is 'Shaw Lane'. That is where the 'International Center' is located (also the book store). The IC was the location of daily Iranian student 'marches' while chanting 'the Shaw is a murderer! Down with the Shaw!' (1977-79)0 -
