Sure it is a Wasp,

Looking at it. (But) What is it it that looks like a giant Yellow Jacket? (1-1 1/2" long.) One just landed on my shoulder, I brushed it off, and smacked it dead with my "Jesus Sandals," as my neighbor called them yesterday.

I've seen them flying around. First time one landed on me. [:0][B)]

(Back deck, with the dog and the Tablet.)


These things look like they could hurt you.

    we've allways called them ground hornets, look like yellowjackets but big fat bodies, ones around here live in ground make small funnell shaped entrance holes.

    I killed one in my workshop.Never been stung by one but they have a stinger that's about the size of a number 4 finish nail.

    ground hornets can be dangerous from the allergy, infection, or sepsis...one is bad ...a swarm of em hitting you is a very bad deal...i plowed up a nest of these once riding in the first tractor i owned with a cab...they were banging on the glass like deranged asassins..they could ID me in the cab...just at dusk and they attacked again as i made two more rounds till it got cool enuff they retreated....i would have been toast on an open tractor cause one could not run fast enuff to get away....lady luck ++++

    European Wasp or German Yellow Jacket?


    If they are the same as what we have here in SW Virginia they will swarm a light at night!

    Normal Yellow Jackets can be wiped out at night because they prefer to nest when its dark.

    I turn on the driveway light then stand under it with an old tennis racket.

    Great sport practicing my serve and backhand return!



    Best solution for Wood Bores as well.

    guess you missed my story sunday, german yellow jackets are no larger than a sweat bee or a skinny fly

    Looked at the illustrations. Its not any of those. I'ts forward 1/2 body is a dark cinnamon Brown. Abdomen is 5 wide bands of yellow. More full bodied that a "Cicada Killer." Not so much black in it as well.

    Looking it at it right now, as I sit on the back porch with the dog, in my "Jesus Sandals," and my Tablet. [:D]


    Is it wrong to kill something with Jesus Sandals? [:0][B)]

    ...Yeppers..GIANT (big mutha!) about 3" long...slow flying and come out when the Cicadas do (locust for us country boys)...circle around close to the ground and checking out tree trunks looking for the locusts to sting/paralyze/bury, and to lay their eggs in.

    Caught one once and measured its stinger, a tad over 1/4" in length (!)...I do NOT want to know how it feels to get hit by one of these, bound to make your tongue flop out of your mouth and make you drool, Jesus H Christ. Ive never seen them act aggressive towards anyone that left them alone...[;)]
