Close call this Morning
Driving on the freeway on the way to work. Some idiot was walking in-between the lanes wearing all black. I was able to dodge him barely.
He did not make it a couple of cars back got him.

I worked as a paramedic in a small town in Georgia for many years. About once a year we had a person, usually African American, usually drunk, just walk out in front of the traffic, at night, on US 441, usually the person was drunk.
Surprisingly about half survived.
Back in Africa a young man had to go out on the Serengeti alone with a spear and challenge a lion to a death match, these days, they challenge a chrome bumper.0 -

I was going past a St. Louis exit ramp on a stormy night back in '81 when I saw a car hit a guy who was walking in the center of the lane. Had to have been a suicide but I never heard any more about it.
The weird thing is that it shocked me so much I wasn't even sure if I had seen it or imagined it for some time.0 -
I was at the headquarters of my company last year in Columbia SC.
The Safety Officer wanted to show me a video. We have, like 'em or not, video cams that show the road in front.
This happened on a 4 lane highway in North Carolina last year, not an interstate but looked like an interstate.
One of our guys was driving down the road, on the screen it has all kinds of data such as truck speed, what gear the truck was in, angle of pitch in case taking a tight turn, whether brakes are on and percent of brakes, really so much data it is scary.
So this guy is driving his 18 wheeler in broad daylight, truck is in the right lane, and then, you can see a guy lurking under a bridge on the right side of the road.
Suddenly the guy runs out right in front of the big truck.
Driver hammers the brakes, and swerves into the left land. Good move but if you swerve too fast, you jack knife.
The man ran into the left land. Right then I said "That ba*tard is trying to commit suicide!"
And the safety officer said "Yep."
Driver swerved back towards the right, and the man ran back towards the right, he hit the man with the right fender. Truck had slowed from 65 to 28 mph.
They Life Flighted the suicide guy, surprisingly he was still alive a month later but he was an ICU basket case, unconscious. Probably had run up a million in medical cost. He was probably going to die soon.
Guy told me that the driver had not been back to work after 2 months had a PTSD deal going on not sure if he would ever get behind the wheel.
I know that would be hard to deal with, to have killed a man with your truck, even if he was trying to commit suicide. Sad story.0 -
A friend of mine hit a drunk who ran out between two cars into his lane and killed him. Took a while to get the feelings of guilt to go away, but there was simply no way to avoid hitting him. One of my greatest fears is hitting a kid. 0 -
Wasn't but about a year ago a guy in an electric wheel chair tried to cross a 5 lane local highway at 5am in the dark wearing all dark clothing and no lights...you can guess how it ended..[V] 0 -

Reality hit me in Iraq while attending a class given by members of the Air Force. They talked about how the bad guys would send women and children in front the convoy to get it stopped then ambush it.
Ome of the things that was drilled into out heads was never stop unless ordered to do so by our military escorts. Don?t swerve as they may have planted an IED and expect you to swerve and detonate it. We were told that if anyone runs in front of our trucks to just run them over, women, kids or grown men, run them over. They assured us that the military would provide help in dealing with the mental torture of running over someone.
While there I experianced a lot of IEDs, several complex attacks and about a dozen dead bodies, a few of those dead bodies I got to see them become dead. And no, a body just does not blow up when hit with a .50.
I hit a IP once, but was only going about 5MPH through an IP checkpoint, he walked in front of me and I popped him with the corner of my cab, all it did was knock him backwards and I?m quite sure he wanted to use that AK on me but the guntruck right behind me assured me he would not.
All of that, everytning I saw my biggest fear was having to smush someone, I don?t know if I could hit a kid and I thank God that Inwas never put in that situation, I honestly don?t know if I could do it. I am only aware of one time a civillian ran over and killed a kid, the kid ran in front of a truck begging for food and was run over. The driver was immediatly removed from Iraq and the base suffered some heavy mortar attacks afterward.
Yeah, that was a taste of hell over there.0 -
Several years ago I had a very vivid (in color) nightmare.
I was driving down a residential street to pick up a coworker to go work, when a little blond haired little boy ran out on to the street between two cars and I hit him.
I woke up in a cold sweat and to this day I am haunted by the image.
I can guarantee you that when I am in a residential area and there are parked cars on the street my speed is 20mph max...especially if there is a play ground there.
I can't imagine how one would feel if the nightmare was real...devastating I am sure.0 -
Allen- your folks may not like the cameras and data recorders, but having retired from the safety arena, I can tell you that ours have saved a driver's butt more than a couple of times. When "Well, it's my word against his" turns into "your word against a video record"- a lot of crap stops right then. 0 -

Seems more than a few folk saw him. Said it looked like he was dancing in the street.
Have to say I had just put the new LED lights on the car and do not think I would have saw him with my old light. Not only was it dark but Foggy. So I also had my fog lights on.
I also for the 1st time in a very long time was driving in the right lane. Normally I drive in the left cause of all the slow drivers, It was a guy in the left lane that got him0
