Did you confirm this date with Bert or Cody? You might want to check that barrel marking by releasing the barrel and sliding it out to see the stamped year on the bottom of the barrel. You might can see the "19" but generally the year is under the receiver.

What resource are you using for the DOM?
Polishing Room Records date ser# 953XXX to 1943, with 14,421 made that year. Ser# range for 1943 is 950580 - 965000. The "E" denotes a production change, what that was, Bert could tell you, if that information still exists. There were two styles of font on the E series, the one on Kasey's gun is the second version, and dates back as far as 1913 that I know of.
Ser# 6652XX was made in 1917, with 28259 made that year. Ser# range for 1917 is 645019 - 673277.
Riot barrels have a bead on the barrel, and has sling mounts. Trench guns have the bead on the bayo lug, have grooves in the barrel for the heat shield, and no swivels.
All that said, one in that shape with the Winchester bayo can easily bring 5 figures. That makes for a lot of well done fakes. I'm interested in Bert's assessment, he has a good eye for real and fake.0 -
Bert sent me a nice email letting me know the serial number dates it to 1943 and the stock should be marked GHD. I need to check the barrel with a mirror and light.....as soon as I can get that done I'll add something to the listing.

Bert is of course, on the mark with the date. My 97 is 956XXX and the Cody letter said it is a 1944 gun. The bottom of the barrel is marked 43. I read somewhere that in 1943, Winchester had a production run to cut 10,000 barrels. I am still curious to see what your 97 has on the barrel. 0 -
