"Ruptured Duck"

I was watching an old episode of "Dexter" and the character played by Jimmie Smitts was wearing a lapel pin that looked to me like the discharge pin (often called the "Ruptured Duck") issued to WWII soldiers. Does anyone know why Smitts would wear that?

  I did do some searching and found no reason for him to be wearing it. Both as an individual or Character based.
