Retired Sgt. Richard Strader spent more than 20 years on the job with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

I'm as feed up with deficient, made up, fact lacking news as some of you seem to be. But there are real reason to post news lacking in details. One of them is to get the news of a crime out to the public as soon as possible on the chance (slight as it may be) that someone will recall something of value for investigators to evaluate. Someone may see something of value and every day wasted diminishes the memory of it.
News isn't novels, it's just news, as least it's supposed to be. Putting out the report, even with minimal information, let's the public know it happened and increases the odds of a useful tip coming in. They can always report more details when they get them. No time is lost in doing it this way, but some may be gained.
I know tips from the public are few, especially on such limited information. But if the public doesn't know the odds of a useful tip are a lot less. Yes, the more information the better. Time is also important. There is not time lost in releasing limited information while compiling more. what is important is not to put put information that would mislead folks and hinder an investigation. I can't see where to first article did that.0
