Taps/internal thread chasers
So what do you guys use. Been needing to get a set. But with this new H&R. Now it is a need.

I use only gun taps (a 2 or 3 flute tap). I don't even have a 4 flute hand tap anymore. Stick with something from Greenfield or other name brand.
More importantly is the cutting fluid. Tap Magic cannot be beat. A little money spent on cutting fluid beats the hours spent getting out a broken tap.0 -
tap majic is good, just make sure you use the right one for various metals....dont use TM-steel on aluminum. on stainless there is a great fluid containing molyb. surprisingly wd-40 works great on aluminum too. 0 -
Have some stuff that is a wax is blue and comes in a tube. Works great but I only have a small amount left and have not seen it for sale. 0 -
Ask about Screw drivers and everybody has a comment ask about a tap and if it is not for beer nobody posts. 0 -
Are these just for firearms, or for general purpose? I buy only American made high speed steel taps. 0 -
yes, high speed steel taps is my preferred style also. i have used those coated tap sets sold in Lowes, and they are not the smoother cutting tools they are said to be. buy a good set of Hanson taps, or Cleveland brand and have a quality tool set.......then acquire the "touch" on how to tap by hand to avoid mishaps...broken taps are never easy to remove. 0 -

Since these are smaller in size think they will be used only on guns. I have cheapo sets that work ok on Cars and other projects but checked my Gun Smithing Screw Kit and the sizes in it do not come in standard kits. Such as 6-48, 8-40, 10-32 probably best if I got bottoming taps. I may just have to go buy individual taps. Already have a good driver.0 -

General purpose thru holes, a 2 or 3 flute high speed steel, spiral point, name brand tap, usually have Morse on hand at work. For blind holes I like to use spiral flute tapes, again, Morse, or another I use is Procut, I think, would have to check that. It's a korean made good quality tap. I have some powdered metal ones made by Dormer for doing
some pipe taps, (G series, BPP).
Don't use cheap taps, stay away from hardware store brands.
Don't work harder than you have to.0 -
I remembered I had some taps I used to build a couple AK's instead of Rivets I used button head machine screws and had to get taps for them.
To bad none are the size I need.
But I did find, I cannot find one Magnifying glass in the house or Garage. Took them to work. So if I buy anything today its another magnifying glass just for the Gun tool box.[:D] Old age sucks used to be able to read that stuff no problem. Now even with glasses on its way to tiny.0 -
So All I found in town was the magnifying glass.
Came home went to Brownells. Put the 3 sizes in my basket in Bottoming tap only. Just before I check out they do the thing people who bought these also bought. Damned if they did not have every size I wanted in Bottoming, plug and regular tap plus drill bits and cutting fluid for about the Price of the 3 I had in my basket.
Went to check out they had free shipping going. Got that when I was all done I noticed they must have taken another 10%. Think Military discount not sure cause they do it every time I checkout. I had just forgotten about it.
