    BTW, contrary to the narration, the whale shot actually used a full ton (2,000 lbs) of 40% dynamite. Explosives placed under whale- resting on water saturated sand. Since water is practically incompressible, all of the force is directed UP (Up and Away!)


    I purchased a copy of the video from KATU some time ago- used it as part of a class. Tape has closed captioning. After they fire the shot, mike is picking up a little old lady talking to her husband, and you can read as she says "Ok Fred- you can take your fingers out of your ears...? Here come pieces of...OH- MY GOD!"

    What a waste. Think how many whale tacos 84 could have made from that.

    In one of the videos an explosives and whale expert said when a whale explodes from the buildup of methane gas it has the force of four sticks of dynamite. Considerably less than the ton used in Oregon, but some impressive explosions.
