Looking to buy an AR in 5.56. Not interested in building one,but rather buy one off the store shelf,ready to go.
In quality,and performance, what are the top three?

I have an Armalite, as well as a RRA National Match. Can't complain about either.
The question is very subjective as each person will have different choices as to top 3, bottom 3, so I won't even bother listing mine.

I have a Colt 6920, a Daniels Defense V11LW, and a LWRC piston gun. If I had to choose just one I would keep the DD just cause it is a little lighter and has a good rail which the Colt does not. The LWRC is like most piston guns a bit heavy. Any of the three would be just fine as they are all top of the line rifles in my opinion. I also like the Smith and Wesson rifles. Rock River also builds nice rifles. If money was no object I would buy a FN SCAR 17 in .308. I love that rifle but it's over $3000.00.[:0][:0] 0 -

That is a broad question...first..what is your budget? DI or piston? Now is the time to buy a premium AR, they aren't going to get much cheaper. If you are looking for top of the line, premium AR-15s you'll not be disappointed in Daniel Defense, LWRC, Radian Arms...$1800 to $2500, in the $800- $1600 range depending on model and Colt, FN, RRA, Bushmaster, DPMS, and Wyndham... In the under $700 S&W M&P, Ruger, Aero precision and Palmettos State...
I would avoid Anderson (they've had QC issues with out of spec lowers)0 -

^^^ this guy...LWRC M6IC is the shiznit for the current price...can be had under $2000 and used to be $27000 -
I think for the money it's hard to beat a S&W MP-15 sport 2.
But that's if you are looking for a high value AR.
Of course if you are looking for a top dollar AR you might want to look elsewhere.0 -

I would suggest you focus on rifles with 1 in 8 or 1 in 7 twists. Some of the cheaper rifles tend to have 1 in 9 twist barrels. 1 in 7, 1 in 8 performs better with the heavier 62gr-77 gr ammunition available.0 -

Sig 400, excellent- Have Sig piston, on the heavy side but it's a brute. CORE AR's are really nice. DPMS are on the cheaper end but no problems with mine- And I have all mentioned and then some -these are my top ones/ 0 -
I have 3 ARs and am still confused about what I hear and read.If I can buy a $500. or a Bubba cobbled AR that is dependable and sub MOA and surprisingly many of them are,why should I pay 2 or 3 grand for one? 0 -
For my plinking and home defense (and general end of the world as we know it) I have picked up the Savage Recon in 5.56.

They are going for as low as $700 at times. They felt a little better than the Saint for me at least. I did swap out the Blackhawk furniture since I like Magpul better.
I don't think you will go wrong with the Saint, Savage Recon, M&P or Wyndham for what you are looking to do.0 -

Say what you will, I can "build" an AR that's as "good", as functional, as accurate as most any "factory made" AR(and my name isn't Bubba).
Most of those "name brands" use parts from the same vendors as I can buy from internet suppliers.I can give advice on what brands provide top value for the $$ but it's a waste of time.
For $1200 you can get a decent AR, an optic, a bag of magazines, and 1K of blasting ammo.0 -
I don't know about the "top three" but I do like Daniel Defense. I only got the DDM4V7 upper but "she's nice". And a "complete" runner ain't cheap. 0 -

The best AR is the AR-180B. Uses 15 mags but is a closed piston gas system like the AK.
Stoner created it to overcome the shortcomings of the AR-15, but the AF had already invested heavily in the filthy AR-15. [:p] Go clean your impingement gas system. [;)]

Association of cost to twist rate has no relevance. You can purchase a high quality expensive barrel in any twist rate you want. Twist rate is really only a factor in what kind of bullet you want to shoot.0 -

I have had more than a few people whose opinions I greatly respect tell me that the S&W is one hell of a gun for the money. Astoundingly accurate, reliable, and for a dirt cheap price.
There are some VERY nice guns out there for a huge amount of money, but if a gun goes bang every time and makes small groups, isn't that really all that you need?0 -

I never was an AR guy. Then I got one, then two, then several. They work, they are accurate, and now they are CHEAP!! I suggest buying a few (dozen) now because you never know when the cheap part will change. 0 -

I never said you couldn't, however if you look at factory rifles their cheaper models tend to have 1 in 9 twist barrels. The S&W M&P Sport II is a prime example. If it had a 1 in 7 twist barrel I'd have considered them, but they have a 1 in 9. As does Bushmaster's lower tear tier models, and DPMS. PSA is one of the few that offers 1 in 7 in their cheaper tier models.0 -

I just purchase 13 Ruger AR-556s for my PD, ordering 6 more in a couple weeks. For the cost ($500 per rifle), specs, and CS support I found it a better deal than the S&W M&P II which was the next closest competitor. That is one of my AR's Joe. I've been very pleased with it. I would not take it back. It wears a Vortex Strikefire that co-registers with the fold down sight. I was going to weigh in with this combo, but hey - Who am I?0
