After instituting a $1.5 trillion tax cut and signing off on a $675 billion budget for the Department of Defense, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that the only way to lower the record-high federal deficit would be to cut entitlement programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.
?We're going to have to get back next year at entitlement reform, which is how you tackle the debt and the deficit,? Speaker Ryan said on a conservative radio program around the same time.

Not only do we need to get them out of the country and off the roles we need to do an audit of the system and get all these so called people with disabilities checked out.
I see them all the time in the parking lot with handicap placards. The only thing wrong with them is they are obese. They should have to park farthest away so they get some exercise walking to the store.
We need to audit all these people on welfare and ebt/snap programs.
The bottom-line should be if you are on Gov assistance you need to prove you need it and have some way to pay it back either in your time or some other means.
I have never seen a skinny person on welfare. Most smoke and drive nicer cars than I have.
Another Idea, make December the no Gov assist month. In Dec the USGOV pays out 0 dollars in assistance.
One more, If on Gov assistance for 5 years your right to vote is suspended.0 -

I agree with him to some extent but his timing is rather odd.
First of all Social Security needs to be means tested, no sense denying Grampa a meager pittance so a Millionaire can get his too. I know they paid in but everyone paid into Welfare and doesn't get it either.
So means testing will preserve Social Security for those who have no other sources of income.
Secondly Social Security needs to have the cap removed, it is nothing more than a tax and it is a regressive tax since after X income (about 130K a year now) you no longer pay 16.5% tax on your earnings.
Finally Medicare was so badly underfunded from the get go it is stupid. Again Means testing, my Mother has Excellent health Insurance from the Feds, yet MEDICARE pays first! WTH!
Means testing and raising the contribution on Medicare is essential, also I agree with the other posters regarding the fraud and waste.
We always read about some Doc who has scammed the system, string them up, they won't do it anymore than.
Also get the posers who work full time under the table digging ditches and such while drawing disability off the rolls.0 -

Social Security is already means tested. They long ago added an Income Tax on the Social Security payouts & it includes a MASSIVE marriage penalty.
If you are single you pay nothing extra if 1/2 your SS payments plus the rest of your income including payouts from your IRA total less than $25,000. 50% of the next $9,000 is taxed & over that 85% is taxed.
For married couples those numbers only go up to $32,000 & $12,000.
That means a married couple will pay on 85% of their SS if the total is $44,000 while two unmarried people could live together & still pay NOTHING on a total of $50,000.
I've tried many times to explain this to my wife but she still won't agree to a divorce & then living together.
Live on your IRAs & delay taking SS. You will save double taxation on the IRA & increase your SS payout.0 -

I'm okay with his intention to eliminate Social Security. I would simply like everything I've paid into SS, with interest, returned to me with an apology from our government for stealing it from me in the first place. [^]
To be realistic and not sugar coat anything, this elimination of funds means more people will off themselves and/or become criminals in order to survive. The percentage of those collecting under false claims is tremendously outweighed by those that are in fact entitled to receive it. "Mitch" apparently doesn't remember the Great Depression, but his family is of wealth so it wouldn't apply/matter. Never mind.
People that suggest such drastic measures to fix the country's debt problems are always tremendously wealthy and would never feel the impact personally. Those are the same politicians that we over pay for their "life of service to control others" (while profiting in some fashion from it). Both Bush's are perfect examples from the top of the chain and I could go on with members from both parties.
We need to limit our politicians to something realistic like 5 years of service maximum. It's bad enough that we can be stuck with a bad president for 8 years. [B)]

Yes, we have paid in, but with us living so much longer and the pittance we paid in when we started working, we are, even after the growth of the funds based upon the purchase of US Treasuries, receiving much more than we paid in.
Our children and grandchildren are paying for this, and will be paying on the debt we created by our selfishness long after we are gone.

Has anyone here considered the actual population of "senior citizens" living today and us "baby boomers" who are now making those numbers explode each and every month that goes by!
This problem has been very well known for many years. It has been on the minds of some of the best thinkers in our country but in reality, nothing has been done to rectify anything with the exception of changing the numbers of deduction limits on the working man.
IMO, had our politicians left the mounting dollars put into the system alone and invested it into conservative US market plans, there would today be such an over-abundance of wealth.....the give outs would be so much more rewarding for all of our hard working citizens!0 -
On another note, it shames me to read these threads with many putting down disabled people and wanting to take away what few crumbs that are given to them.
It is fine and dandy when one is blessed to not have any health issues along their working lives and make enough to take trips to places many can't even dream of! To live in homes of luxury and even own other vacation houses as well. It becomes very easy to rest upon your big nest eggs and condemn those AMERICAN citizens in need.0 -

Social Security is a tax. Like any other tax, we have no say how it's used once collected. We have no expectation we'll see any direct benefit. We've no legal right to have any of it returned. There's no "give me back what I paid in and I'll opt out" any more than can be done building a road, a battleship or a kid who's public education goes south. You don't use the road, the battleship sits idle. Tough luck, we have no immediate recourse.
The whole "pay in to" Social Security or Al Gore's "lock box" is a ruse to keep us paying and disguise what it really is. Tax payments, to be used however the government prefers.0 -

I started in the social security system before 1964 when silver certificates were issued to the public. Since I started with that exchange rate I see no reason why I should not be pay off on the same scale if they wish to abolish it and pay me off.
