    If they do impose the extra 5% fee, there'll be no advantage to shopping in the commissary versus an outside supermarket. So it's possible that few if any veterans would go through the hassles of getting an ID card and shopping on base.

    Unless they really want to buy MREs, that is.

    22 years in...22 years out....I can say this........
    milk and eggs are cheaper, but
    walmart is cheaper overall than the PX/NEX commissary.
    AND BETTER QUALITY.

    if its better at walmart...you can imagine what the PX is.

    AT ONE TIME- the PX and Commissary were a very good deal. About 1986.

    Now..... not so much. As far as the PX, I can do a LOT better on line. Groceries- WallyWorld. Especially if I add in the mileage to get to the PX.

    Most of the time you would be right but Camp Pendelton and MiraMar Are some good places to shop. You did not want to go to either around the 1st or 15th. 1st was retiree and wives shopping and 15th was just wives. They had a line going to the door.

    Baggers you are lucky if you can find an open checkout line at Wal-Mart and don't have to use self check out here. Commissary baggers work for tips.

    But I have not been in one in years none but a Coast guard one here in Oregon. Fort Lewis is too far away and quality is sub par.

    Ft Bragg has a nice commissary, 2 of them in fact.

    But with coupons Walmart or Food Lion is about the same.

    The Commissary does carry stuff you cannot get off post.

    The Class 6 is the best deal if you smoke and drink.

    Just needs to verify Status, service dates and such.
    I've used it several times, but... on par with prices at Walmart.

    We buy most of our groceries at the Hill AFB Commissary, and all of our booze. We make a monthly run. The problem we have with supermarkets in Utah is that everything is packaged in super-jumbo family size. For super-jumbo-sized families.

    For a retired couple, that means a whole lot of repackaging, and often eventual loss. We just can't eat that much that fast. The Commissary has packaging more suitable for singles and couples.

    keesler has a great comm. best meat dept. around, will even custom cut. wal-mart is a little cheaper on some things but not enough to make me want to go there.
