Need some shipping advice

I am going to be listing a Dillon 650 with 45ACP and 45LC dies and two powder measures. It has a lot of spare parts too boot.

My question; the weight will be around 39-40 pounds shipped in the Dillon factory box; what shipping method will be the least costly at that weight and how would you price shipping in the listing?

    If you know the weight and box dimensions, go to the UPS or Fed-up web sites and see what they'll charge. USPS will be a killer.

    UPS was in the past the best price for larger items for me
    but as suggested go the web sites I pick California as my destination from Ohio shipping to make sure I was covered when stating a price then refund any difference to the buyer if there was any

    I do similar to DR, except I do not offer a refund. I pick two places as far from my home as can be, that are still in the lower 48. Then I average the two, and that's the shipping charge. Also, if it's worth more than 100.00 I put insurance on the package, and add that price into the shipping price. On insured shipments, I do not give the buyer the option of insurance, or no insurance. I put insurance on, and the buyer pays. YMMV

    UPS and Fed-Ex Ground are nearly identical in price. Within 1% in most cases. NOW......if the item is under 15 lbs, then USPS Parcel Select is the way to go. It will be cheaper than UPS/FX in most cases, but DOES NOT come with insurance, if the item is high value.

    One other thing: Because of the weight, the size won't make too much difference in this instance, so put it in an outer box and just pay a little bit more. You can NOT over-pack stuff these days!

    The shipping on that many pounds will be anywhere from $35-70, depending on how far it is going, and (this is the important part) how large it is. UPS/FX now charge by SIZE, as well as weight. This changed a few years ago, when it used to be by weight only, and dimensional pricing only kicked in when it was above 18" x 18" x 18".

    Personally, I'd put the shipping at $50, and eat the rest. Any higher, and you will lose bids.

    On big heavy items like this, I put a notice in the listing that says "Sorry the shipping is so much, but UPS and Fed-Ex rates are high now. If the shipping is less than $xx, I'll refund you the difference." That rarely happens though, as I know the rates pretty well.

    Any other questions, just ask. I ship 1k-2k items a month.
