While I agree with your basic premise, the plastic plague is real. There are areas in the Pacific that are blanketed with plastic. Can you point me to even one instance where discarded plastic waste benefits man, plants, or animals?
I started life with paper straws. Biodegradable and made from a renewable resource. They work fine.
In this particular example, don't soil the message with the slimy messenger.0 -

At Heathrow airport they have containers to deposit used gum that a made from recycled gum.
Perhaps plastic straws can be recycled into some type of plastic vessel that could contain used plastic.
An innovative person may even be able to come up with a way to tie it closed, perhaps with a separate piece of plastic inserted into a loop formed by folding the top edge upon itself to form a tunnel in which this second piece of plastic could be used as a drawstring of sorts.
The US does a good job of removing plastic from the waste stream and either recycling it, burning it for energy, or depositing it in landfills. The problem cited by P3 is very real, but for the most part is a problem with how Asia handles its garbage.0 -

Thanks Sam. You are correct about Asia. Europe is no star on it's waterways either. Look at some Youtube clips of draining river inlets of the Thames and others. Disgusting.
The problem in America is not the plastic that makes it to the garbage can, it's the six pack holders and plastic bottles that are discarded by the user out of ice chests.
Google pictures of dead creatures that have plastic around their neck or stuck in their gullet.
If people can pickup dog crap, picking up plastic crap should be a breeze. [:I]0 -
All of us, and our kids too will be dead before straws become an issue to the environment on as large a scale than a volcano or earthquake.
If paper straws make you happy, awesome; if not suck what you want through what you want and be happy!0
