Question Reloading dies

I have a young friend that is asking what dies he should get to reload 9mm and 223 and thanks in advance

    They're all just fine. Nothing wrong with Lee dies for a new reloader, to be honest.

    Why Full length on a bolt action?

    I've always neck sized only on bolt guns.

    Re neck size and the 223, that's what I use for bolt rifles rather than FL. I do have a FL die in case I grab once fired from someone else's day at the range.

    I like the Hornady necksizers. They're not cartridge specific but rather based on case length - short, medium, magnum, etc. Meaning you can but one type for 222 Remington, 223, 22-250 lengthed cases. The inside neck sizing button is long and tapered, slips through the case neck nice & easy.

    I do not like Hornadys New Dimension dies. The bullet seating die with the alignment sleeve and stem will give you problems.
    The stem will sometimes bind causing one to ruin a case.

    All is held in place by a cheap retaining ring which is easily damaged and the sleeve and stem will fall out. What a POS setup.

    My advice: Avoid Hornady New Dimension dies

    I think Lee has the cheapest carbide dies. I agree with those of you recommending a carbide die and Lee's are the cheapest. I have a couple sets of Lee's and can not tell the difference in the loading quality between the Lee's and those much more expensive.

    I use Lee dies and have only had one issue. One die I bought years ago had a burr inside that scratched the case. I called Lee and they sent me a new die that day.

    Other than that, I have been very happy with the dies and the other Lee equipment.

    Carbide for pistol is an absolute must. No lubing makes pistol reloading a breeze.

    As mentioned Small Base for semi-auto. Most semi's will do fine with a FL set as well but SB will take care of the few that need that extra sizing at the base so why not just start there?
    I too use neck sizers for bolt guns but I have a FL for each caliber.
    If you have more than one bolt gun and do not keep them sorted you need to full length (maybe)

    I kept different head stamps for each gun to make things easier.

    Funny how modern bolt guns could not interchange using a neck sizer (Mine) but the old WWII German K98ks only needed neck sizing and worked in any other K98k (mine)
