  Apropos of nothing but maybe slightly relevant...
  
  I took down a chimney / brick and mortar fireplace with an uncle when I was a kid...
  
  Much to my surprise he layed a bunch of moving blankets and a tarp in the hearth - and we dropped the bricks down through the chimney into the house as we went - the drop knocked off much of the excess mortar - only broke a few bricks...
  
  He recycled them into a porch adjacent BBQ grill pad / alcove.
  
  And +1 on the old brick value - especially odd sizes or color shades of stamp impressed or ones with branding or logos.

  The job is all done, so now I just have to do cleanup. I will save the good bricks and see if anyone is interested in them around here.
