Who made the space suits used in the Apollo Project?

What company was also involved in the beginning that was mucking up the contract to the point the space suits were not going to be ready for manned flight?

    Was it Playtex (sp)? I know that it was some sort of women's underwear company.

    Now I'll go and look it up....

    It was either Playtex or a company associated with Playtex.

    WOW, that was quick!

    It was indeed Playtex. The first contract, canceled after unsatisfactory performance was managed by none other than Hamilton Standard. Hamilton was given management oversight because they had long experience handling large government contracts.

    It was a utter failure.

    The contract was canceled and finally awarded to Playtex because they had the best design and ability to produce from the get-go. This shows that private ingenuity, unhampered by worrying about government bureaucrats is the ONLY way to progress. Government is a huge problem when seeking innovation.

    To be honest, I knew it was a woman's underwear company and Playtex was just a guess. I was too young to remember Gemini, but I was fascinated by the Apollo Program.
