Auto knife question

asop
would i be allowed to give one away on this board? i was thinking a s&w, dalton, or benchmade. i'm almost to 500 posts(only took 2.5 years), but hey. i don't want to get in trouble with the mods. cody

    Italian knives always say INOX for stainless, at least since the 60's that I've seen. I smuggled a few back from Italy in '78. Still have one 8 or 9 inch one left. Stainless with black bone handles.

    The good Italian fare is the work of true master craftsmen - from hand fitted and hand finished to hand made.

    They also have some very nice working blades that won't break the bank.

    Yes there are still some cheap Italian imports and knock offs.

    Most Chinese fare is import grade cheap or a knockoff - and there are many well known branded blades now manufactured in China.

    I don't believe there is much coming out of China that meets craftsmen or hand finished definitions.

    I think Mark Christian may be on of the resident experts on auto knives.

    I am seeing some good quality knives coming out of China now. Some I would rate at least as high as anything I see from CRKT or Smith and Wesson.

    I have a couple Italian made. One from the 50's or 60's with black horn handle ( I know - but I am not a knife person so forgive me for calling them handles) It is simply marked "Made in Italy" at the base of the blade. The other is a smaller version marked INOX with stag.

    I don't consider either of them a quality knife. The larger is an 8" total when open and has brass liner . I think that it was likely considered a very passable stiletto in its day. It has a strong spring.
    My state forbids their carry. I would otherwise be interested in a upper quality spring assist knife.

    If you're buying foreign buy German. When I was in to blades the Italian were like the Chinese of the day. Stab and leave it in. Now I'm sure like the Chinese of today do make the "good" ones. It just balls down to you get what you pay.

    Ya-I have some that I brought back from both Germany and Italy many years ago also. Some were the 1 1/2' key chain style! Was looking at a few at a gun show this past week end and they were laser marked "made in Italy"?? Brass liners, 13" open bone handle $175. Guess there's no guaranteed method to really know where they originated from[xx(]. Thanks
