S&W model 10 police handgun value???Update

A friend wants to sell me his father's old police issued service revolver. It was left to him and has no sentimental value. He doesn't like firearms. Gun is in good shape. what is a fair offer???? Oakie

Bought the gun. Has almost no wear on it. Gun looks like it was hardly holstered. Has a 4" barrel, came with a case and one full box of ammo. Now for the great part. I got the good friend deal. 50 bucks. I tried to give him 250 for the gun, but he wouldn't take it. Just want 50 bucks. Nice to have good friends.[^] Oakie

    By searching completed auctions on GB, looks like $300.00-$350.00.

    Well, imo, probably a worn finish if it was issued in the day, 300 for one with the finish worn and the one grip which is always worn more than the other.

    I bought my first handgun in the 1960's. It was a police S&W Model 10. They were being sold in a small town near me and my oldest brother wanted to go look.

    They had them at the municipal power plant thrown into a cardboard box.

    There were about 12 to 15 guns and about 1/2 were Colt the rest S&W.

    They were well used guns but even at the time they were at the right price. Your choice for $15.00 . I was 16 at the time. It was cash and carry.


    Times change so my offer on one now would have to be higher. Like maybe $30.00 [:D]

    OK - all kidding aside it is near impossible to evaluate the value without knowing more regarding condition, etc. Personaly I would never pay $300 for an old police M10 unless it was in near mint which is unlikely. If police marked it would add value, but for an average gun of this nature my thoughts are in the $225 to $250 range.

    If in need of work, like change up, cylinder gap, or things of that nature then to me you drop off another $75 from those numbers. Maybe even more if you can't do the work yourself.
