Cheap China Knife

I went to the pawn shop and bought 3 plastic tool boxes full of tools for 40 dollars.

After i paid for everything i asked to look at the knives. They did not have any knives that were worth anything.

However they had a nice looking 3 blade knife with pretty wood on it. The knife did not have anything written on the blades except 440 stainless steel and on the other side of the knife was written China.

I told them i wanted the knife and they just gave it to me.

I took it home and sharpened it and its really really sharp.

The only reason i got the knife was because it has 440 stainless steel and i think thats a pretty good steel for a knife.

Plus free does make a difference.

What steels are best to look for in a knife?

    440 stainless on one side & china on the other is an oxymoron.
    It's cheap , it will take an edge but won't keep it if you use it

    440 is good for knives. But what's more important is how it is tempered. 440 that has not been tampered right is still junk

    And I doubt anything it comes from China is done right.

    But the price you paid for it you can't go wrong. You can use it to cut things you never want to cut with a good knife

    I sometimes carry a Chinee flip open with a pocket clip. I can put a saw edge on it with a V sharpener. Good for opening dog food bags, etc. Stuff I don?t want to cut with a super sharp Soligen blade.
    Some are very well made, just not the best blade material.
    There?s no reason a chinaman can?t be trained to make a quality knife. The difference is the materials of construction.

    China is making some very decent knives these days but there is still some junk. I put cheap knives and non working magazines in the same place; the trash can. I don't want to cut myself and damn sure don't want bad mags mixed in with my good ones.

    Not China made but check out the Mora brand knives from Sweden Tough and well built with a very affordable price point Another good inexpensive knife are the Opinel brand from France For about the same price as Chinese junk you have a quality knive that has led an edge and will not mind a little abuse

    Buck (as well as some other knife companies) decided they could increase their profit margins by having knives made in China. So they went there with their spec sheets in hand.

    Surprise! The Chinese could make Buck's knife with equal, if not better quality, including the steel!
    And...get this...for pennies on the dollar!

    So, the Buck Vanguard that I like so well, can be produced for less than 7 bucks. Buck can sell them for 85 dollars rather than the $110 they had been charging. (I wonder how much of that $110 was profit?)

    Americans caught Buck doing what American business has become so good at over the last 50 years - making money with cheaper production methods and built-in obsolescence.

    When Buck sales suffered they promised to stop their Chinese production and return to the USA.

    However, right now you can buy a Buck Vanguard knock-off directly from China for around $12. And they are good quality knives.

    Its the same story with automobiles, TV's, watches, even guns, etc. (Isn't Ford moving to Mexico? How many fine guns come from Japan?)

    Where do our loyalties lie? (Phony patriotism aside)
    With Big Business? - that does not give a hoot about us.

    My loyalty lies with me and mine?

    Along with some junk, there are quality knives coming from China, Japan, Taiwan and other countries.
    If you choose carefully you can carry a quality knife for a reasonable price.

    Spyderco or Byrd. One handed opening and good steel

    [:D] I have a guy at work that keeps on acting tough because he has a black belt in taekwondo. I keep on telling him that taekwondo is no match for the black belt I hold in .fortyfiveACPdo. he doesn't think I have a chance, I'm going to steal this and show him... That's if you say it's okay.[:D]

    Lots of good knives come from lots of different countries.... The only problem with China, is that they produce far more cheap crap than there quality stuff, which I have seen examples of there quality knives and there crap stuff.... It's night and day difference.

    The question is...what tasks are you going to do with the knife?

    I like general EDC type knives to be made from 1084, 1095, A-2 or O-1 steels. Quality, common steels with well known heat treating methods.

    I have a few 'super steel' knives, too. ELMAX and 3V have both performed well for me. The thing is, they are also more expensive than a good carbon steel blade.

    IMO, unless you are constantly exposing your knives to corrosives, or just don't take care of them, stainless steels are not really needed.

    There are many good knives out there. Helle, Enzo, Mora, Bark River, Kershaw, LT Wright, Kabar.......the list goes on. Really nice stuff? Look up Arno Bernard from South Africa, I believe. Beautiful stuff!

    Simple answer......What do you want? The options are nearly endless.
