bow hunting this morning
My tree stand is in the edge of some thick cedar trees. Between the edge of the trees and a corn field is 10 foot wide path/trail.
When I look to the left I have a window in the trees to shoot through with the corn field as a backdrop about 15 yards away from me. When I look to the right or in front of me I have more thick cedars and maples.
Two days ago I was leaving my tree stand going back to the pickup and walked into a buck coming down the trail. Same one I have pictures of and have been planning on killing. Of course after spooking him on the trail I thought this is the last I will see of him.
So this morning I am sitting in the tree stand in the rain. I have a nice big window in the trees to shoot through on my left with corn on the other side of the trail. This is where I should be watching ALL THE TIME but I get bored.
To my right is thick trees with a mock scrape and a few small clearings in the trees. The trees are full of squirrels which provide a lot of entertainment.
The window in the trees I have to shoot through is probably 6 to 8 feet with no branches in the way.
It was raining and I was looking off to the right at a squirrel nest wondering if they are going to come out in the rain so didn?t hear or see him coming down the trail on my left.
By chance I turned my head to the left and saw him. He was so quiet that if I had not turned my head he would have passed by at 15 years and I would have never known it.
When I saw him he was going out the other end of my shooting window. I grunted and he stopped and all I could see was a little clear spot through the trees to the vitals I had to weave an arrow into.
I took the shot and he jumped and ran. I thought I hit him at first then when I got to the ground I found the arrows with no blood on it. I actually found a couple twigs the broad head cut off.
So twice now I have spooked this buck. I will be a miracle if I get a third chance at him.
I won't be hunting again until next Saturday so hopefully this week with no pressure will give him time to cool off and get back into his routine.

Once the rut starts, all bets are off. You may see him in the middle of the day. Or, he may be in the next county. 0 -
I know but I am not crazy about bow hunting during rut. There will be snow and below freezing temps a month from now. 0 -
I gave up trying to predict deer behavior years ago. Good luck and let us know what happens. 0
