So I came across a rather large piece of coal

that my dear departed father must have given me 40 years ago! Thought I'd burn it in our vintage wood burning stove as we were low on logs. Well the thing got so hot after about 4 hours the outer casing starting to glow[:0]. After a fashion I was able to remove it and I thru it outside. That damn thing stayed glowing for days.

    leave a big chunk of coal in a pigpen..they go nuts for it like candy

    coal has lots of energy per mass. growing up in WVa i was taught you could use coal in a cast iron stove but never in one made from sheet metal. yes the iron would glow and put out lots of heat.

    When my children were young, I warned them around Christmas time that they better be good, or else they would get a stocking full of natural gas. (They had never seen coal, so they probably would have been excited to see a lump in their stockings.)
