M1A needs so many specialized tools.
Never thought the thing needed so many tools for old tech. One needs a cool $60 Bolt Disassembly Tool or a .30-06 shell. A Gas Cylinder Wrench BAD-T3 or T-4. I do like this M1 Buddy so much so I'm wondering if they make one for Mini-14? Then there's a Bolt Roller Greaser. I don't know if Mini-14 not having a bearing is a good thing or just cheaped out?
Either case I'm gonna spend a good chunk of change in these specialized tools.

Odd....there really isn't any need for any special tools with the M-1. I suppose some would argue the gas cylinder wrench is a special tool, but it's really not required. A field strip and clean to lube requires nothing more than a 30-06 cartridge.
I thought the two rifles where more similar but I guess they must not be.0 -
For routine maintenance, all the user needs to do is field strip the rifle, then clean & lubricate. Both service rifles have many tools & gauges, as well as detailed technical manuals, that only an armorer will ever need.
You may be experiencing failures caused by the use of cast parts in the M1A by Springfield Armory Inc, rather than forged/milled parts that were used by military contractors in the M14. Rather than buying tools, you may want to pay a local gunsmith to upgrade your rifle.

Get the mil spec cleaning rod handle it has all the tools on it.

Been watching Brownell's M1A video on youtube. Yes I know they show to sell their neat tools but still seems like you at least need the Gas Cylinder Wrench and a empty .30-06 shell. I'll also need the M1 Buddy since the stock's been bedded. They say I shouldn't take the stock on and off too much.
Not having any issues since I'm still paying on mines. Just watching videos. I thought it was basically the same as the Mini-14 with few differences but I didn't know M1A needs special tools.0 -
The gas cylinder plug is either 3/8", or 7/16", so any six point box wrench will work. I've had an M1A since 2001 and have no idea what I would need a 30-06 case for, nor do I even know what an "M1 Buddy" is.
I have the tool Sam pictured, plus the pliers for the flash hider castle nut. Somewhere along the line I also picked up that little roller greaser tool, or at least I think I have it.0 -
I carried and used an M21 for 3 years and I am telling you they are easy to work on. All the tools you need are right there on the Cleaning rod handle. The only thing you should not disassemble is the trigger group and there is no need to.
I drug a M21/14 through every terrain you can imagine;JUngle, Desert, Urban, Artic, European terrain and all over the USA. I probably have 60 static line jumps and 100 Halo jumps with one. I have hit so hard I bent the barrel and broke the stock landing on a runway one night. I have carried one and shot one all over the world and I am here to tell you you don't need that crap.
If yours didn't come with a scope mount do yourself a favor and get one from McCann Ind. They make the best one in the business. They are located in Spanaway WA.0 -

You are over thinking this. I know you have a fancy new toy, but it is based on a service rifle, which means it needs minimal care to operate. You want to take the bolt apart? Why? I'll be there wasn't a single GI who ever disassembled his M14 bolt to clean it, and if he did his sergeant probably chewed his ass and told him never to do it again. Forget all about the Mini 14, it has little or nothing in common with the M14. You are getting advice from gentlemen who were issued M14s and who carried their rifles everywhere they went...listen to them.0 -

Mark, I disassembled the bolt on mine maybe 8 times in 3-4 years. 5 times were to learn how to do it, 2 times were to clean it after it had been in salt water, I also changed out the extractor spring while I had it apart even though it really didn't need it. And one time before an IG inspection(If you have ever been through one of those you will understand).
I was an M60 gunner for 2 years and I only detail disassembled the bolt a few times to clean it after a lot of firing especially blanks.
Rarely did we even take apart the trigger assembly on out M16/M4's.
And we shot and abused our rifles more than just about any civilian does.0 -

I don't wanna take the bolt apart but if I have to Brownells sells a neat tool. I'll cheap out and see if I can get a few .30-06 shells on my next range outing. Shell collecting.
