"Star Blazers: 2199"
Best Buy has it on Blu Ray. Kind a silly putting it on Blu Ray being that it's a 1970s anime. I wonder if it was even in stereo back then? Anyways, that's what's on this weekend.

Some of us were just the right age to grow up with star blazers on broadcast television...
The super space battleship yamato and her wave motion gun always fascinated me as a kid...
The Japanese have produced endless iterations of this saga in animated form and on the big screen via live action - they are culturally obsessed with it...
I remember the cool / hip soul brother African American character - you could not get away with that now...
Star blazers and gall force were always favorites from that genre and time period

It wasn't the one I saw way back when. It's a re-make. I think they put more chicks since I only remember the one in the yellow jump suit. The battle scenes are more jumpy and not the lumbering it take me a while to get up to speed is gone.
I'm gonna see if I can get the 1970s version. I know there was 2 series. One that they got there and the Second one is real fuzzy but I think they go back?

I got the live action one last year. Didn't even know they made that. It was okay like this 2199. Maybe the rust of nostalgia of the original I think was the best even though I haven't seen it in (let me use my fingers [:D]) 40 years?[:0][:0][:0]
The "soul brother" bit reminded me of "Cowboy Bebop" oh that reminds me this Yamato had the same chicken Vicious had (or a distant chicken hawk cousin). "Cowboy Bebop" is excellent if you hadn't seen it.
"gall force" is that a group based as birds? I thought (if it's the same) were called "G Force". I liked the fat guy as a green owl.0 -
No gall force is all chicks - there are no males / men - it's a mythology of how humans came to be on earth sort of...
The original full Length feature is damn good and when you watch it now as an adult you realize how much stuff Hollywood stole from anime and incorporated into movies that we all love
And there are sequels and adaptations and iterations and volumes and offshoots by the dozen based on the original film
It's worth watching if your a sci fi fan
And let's not forget speed racer or "they were 11" in the greater discussion
Much can be watched for free via YouTube - just make sure you get a full English dub

Interesting though that much of anime borrowed from old wild west books written during the late 1800s and early 1900s! i.e. samurie seven borrowed from the magnificent seven.0 -
Looks like there's 7 tv series. That's a crap load of hours. I wonder if they're basically the same story told with better animation? I know "Star Blazer: 2199" is like the new series of "Star Trek". Follows the similar lines with fancy effects. "Star Blazer: 2199" is like the live action movie.
"Speed Racer" just seemed silly. What little I saw of that.
If I can't find or the cost of the discs are crazy I'll fall back to youtube [:D].
kidthatsirish - You got the "Seven Samurai" bit back wards. "Magnificent Seven" was stolen I mean "homage" (a fancy word for stealing, funny Hollywood was even lazy back then [:D]) of the Japo named Akira Kurosawa. Like Eastwood in those "Man With No Name" trilogy stolen I mean "homage" from again Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" and "Sanjuro". Actually "stolen" is correct since I don't think Kurosawa got dime one from any of them.
Don't get me wrong I like them westerns. How can you not love Eli Wallach as Tuco? The man gave us one of the best advice "when you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk".0 -

We would be better off if we never had those Rodger Moore "Bonds" or those Batman of the '90s.0 -

Found the ones I was thinking of when I bought this DVD on youtube. After looking for copies of them on DVD (about $100 a season) and seeing them again on youtube I will not be buying them. Funny I thought the episodes were great (back then) but today not so much. 0
