European Deer Mount:
I finally got my bucks head mounted from last fall. A friend makes these European mounts, and I think he does a pretty good job.
The hole in the top of the skull is from a well intended friend who finally put the kill shot on the deer when we found it still alive. I was afraid his 44mag Bulldog was going to shatter the skull, but it turned out OK. My Yellow Lab Chester is mighty interested in this skull...[:)]
The first thing my wife asked me when I brought it into the house tonight was "And, where do you plan on hanging that THING?". I guess it's going out in the Man Cave...[^]

Nice contrast between the white skull and natural colored antlers.
I have been burying the heads up to the antler base in soil then covering with an old wash tub. Dig them up in the early spring and all the hair and flesh is gone. If left too long, the skull turns dark and the antlers turn white.
But they?re just going to hang on the barn, any way.0 -

But I also have a den in the house where I have a full shoulder mount already hanging, and a large salmon that I caught, along with two gun cabinets, and a bunch of other man type thingys.
I think she meant to insinuate very strongly that we have enough stuff in the house, and I have more room out in the barn...[B)]

no offence intended, as it was a nice buck, just never cared for the skull mount, just me but I would rather a shoulder mount or just a plain horn mount. still a nick buck 0 -

I've never cared for the skull mounts either. To me it just don't relate or depict a animal that was hunted and harvested, looks more like something that maybe just died on it's own and should be nailed on the side of a barn instead of in the house or man cave for display. (no offence intended either)

I have been making skull mounts for many years now. Your friend did a great job. I mount the skulls on plaques I cut out of some old birch veneer kitchen cabinet doors. I remove the old finish and put a radius on the edge using a router. I add a small brass plate engraved with the date of the kill, county and state. I will cut off the cartridge/shell head stamp and screw it on the plaque. If it is bow kill, a broad head with blades is used.
Jim Deere's method of burying the skull does work. first tried it 2 deer ago. The last deer was in full velvet which was preserved by a taxidermist. Ground was frozen by the time I got it back.0 -
My co-worker got his taxidermy license this year, he specializes in european mounts. He has a pile of business, usually does 15 or so over every week end. 0 -

Same here, not a skull mount person.
My brother has the dermasted beetles and makes a lot of these but they aren't my thing. Also some people call them european which is a turn off as well.0 -

Well, that?t kind of where they got their popularity. These types of mounts can bee seen all over Europe in pubs, and man caves where they have been hanging for years.
This type of mount is exreamly inexpensive compared to a full shoulder mount done by a taxidermist. It also takes a lot less time to get the mount back. I had this one back in less then a week, where as the full shoulder mount I have in the den took almost a year.
I already have a larger buck mounted, and couldn?t justify making this smaller one into a full taxidermist wall mount. I still wanted to pay homage to the fact it was what it was, and didn?t want to just chunk it into the corner of the barn somewhere.
Yea, I would love to have a wall full of deer mounts, but that just is not practical, nor is it going to happen since where I hunt a deer like this is few & far between.

I have four done that way.
They were not bigger than the five I have with shoulder mounts.
Have some just with the skull cap also.0
