Salt "ice melt" alternatives

I had a simple recipe for this and now that I need it I can't find it[:(!]. House hold products and supposedly it would last for quite sometime so you didn't have to apply every time it snowed! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  Not sure about household products, but you can use lawn fertilizer. Which seems a bit healthier around plants and grass.

  Homemade Ice Melt
  Mix the following together either in a spray bottle or bucket!
  -1 tsp. dawn dish soap
  -1 Tbsp rubbing alcohol
  -1/2 gallon warm water
  Simply pour or spray where you want ice to melt and know that your pets are safe and SO is your concrete!!

  Brine (like pickle brine) does work - the public works departments apply it over rail crossings or bridge work or steel plates / grating...
  
  Black ash or coal dust works if the sun shines - heat retention factor...
  
  There are pet safe and eco friendly versions of ice melt or road salt but they are pricey..

  Lots of towns around here, [mid Tenn] use beet juice. Great for grasses and plants, but turns white cars pink!![:0]
