They did not reveal if he gave a motive for the shooting.
Smith was charged with Attempted Murder on a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, Criminal Trespassing, and Wanton Endangerment.
The FBI and the Federal Bureau for Alchohol, Tobacco and Firearms have both launched invesigations into the incident.
It is unclear if Smith owned the guns legally. He remains in custody.
The Springfield Police Department praised the employees who raised the alarm, saying: 'They're heroes among us.
'This is proof that the ?see something, say something movement? pays off because of the proactive approach that LB Mfg. officials took in immediately notifying our Police Department.
'It is commendable that our officers were quickly able to apprehend this suspect professionally to divert what could have been a tragedy.'

I'm not convinced. Most LEA's would have difficulty identifying an AR-15, let alone one that was converted to fire in FA mode. (It can't be an AR-15 unless it was made by Colt; they hold the copyright on the name AR-15.)
There are several ways to convert an AR to full auto; however, I think that most folks smart enough to do so are smart enough not to do it.

And I might add that shooting unarmed people or any kind of malicious activity against innocent lives to kill or maim with anything is cowardly at best.
There are many ways to FA the 15 but maybe this is not the appropriate forum to discuss. Owning the FA parts for the 15 is fine as long as you do not own the 15 to put the kit into.0 -

Yes there are a number of ways to convert semi auto guns to shoot full auto. you just need the know how and the tools. The early Colt SP-1 receivers sold to the public in their semi auto state could be modified by a drop in sear that required no modifications. There is always a way if there is a willingness.0 -
Yes, the DIAS (Drop In Auto Sear) allows the early AR-15 to fire FA & the rifle stops when the trigger is released.
The fellas with the bulges in the cheap suits consider the device, with or without an AR-15, to be a machine gun. If caught with an unregistered DIAS, they will break your ovaries.
IIRC, the pre-Internet Shotgun News used to carry classified ads for these devices, at around $200, no questions asked. I assumed it was just a set up for ATF, or a scam, but was never able to verify one way or the other.
