What Would You Charge?
I had to cut 36 hydraulic fittings in half and weld 18 back together. They had to be able to withstand 3000 psi.
I had to drive 45 minuets each way to do the work. I used all his tools except my helmet and gloves. I always use my helmets no matter what.
I had to use tongs to hold the fittings together to weld. I would have brought C clamps and some wood to help square them up if i knew what he wanted welded.
It took about 2 hours to do the work and he offered me 100 dollars and i said that was ok. He runs a small rock crushing business and is struggling.
He did not want to buy 18 right fittings. I have no idea how much 1 fitting cost.
Out of 18 i had 1 with a pin hole leak. I just spot welded it in place and was done.
I told him next time bring them to my house and we will mig weld them instead of stick welding.
Mig welding is a lot easier. It felt good to be able to help someone again.
Thats twice i have welded fittings together for him. LOL

i have homemade hyd fittings for farm iron when i had an odd setup 0 -
I would have charged him 3-1/2 hours @ $70.00/hr.
It's great you want to help people, but he's starting to make a habit of it. I too help people, but if I help someone who is struggling, I do not keep on helping them it they don't make some changes.
To many, struggling is a self inflicted way of life.0 -
I charge $100 an hour if you bring the work to me. Service call fee is $75(within 20 miles+$1.00 after) on top of my hourly.
So assuming a thirty mile drive and two hours labor my bill would be $285.

Dave you sorta remind me of myself I have done countless "jobs / repairs " even bought the parts / material for friends and even people I barely knew all for free or darn close . I guess that's why I am not in business [:I]
since I was a kid , I had friends and family that helped me along the way
but also expected me to learn to do it next time ( If I had the tools and equipment to do it , so I guess Its just paying it forward
all that and a buck will get me a cup of coffee [8D][8D]
will add your a good fellow I guess just charge what ever you want your time and effort and you know the circumstances end of the day if you feel good about it so be it0 -
i have roto-tilled (5' a pass) gardens for neighbors and in town for years NC ....i had people help me many years ago when i started farming and siting on my butt doing this is easy... 0 -
If you dont need a couple loads of gravel around your place - have him deliver to a friends. 0 -
$ 100.00 for a cash transaction is not all that bad.
You had 3.5 hours into it, which gives you a tax free rate of $28.60 per hour.
You did not have to pay FICA, Medicare, Workmen's comp, unemployment insurance, etc. etc., so this equates to a wage of at least $ 50.00 per hour.
I would have asked for a little more, but it was not unreasonable.0 -

Money sometimes isn't the issue. You might need some help and you know who you can lean on. If he was closer I could use about 8 20 ton loads of gravel. 0 -
You never said if the guy was a good friend or just an acquaintence. Makes a difference. I do stuff for friends and they do stuff for me. With friends I don't keep score. If you're happy he paid enough. 0 -

+1 building up the karma bank doesn't hurt. But don't spend all of your effort on people that won't help you out when you call on them.0 -
You worked cheap . Your choice and you didn't get burned, you just did the job for 1/2 price (or maybe less) than many would charge. But then you are not trying to make a living off it.
Like was pointed out it was $100 you didn't have before with no taxes and you didn't have to work but a good half day doing it. A bit of gas and small amount of wear and tear on the vehicle so figure that at $20 to $25? Not big wages but still not chump pay.0 -
