If they made me laugh they would get a warning every time unless it was something dangerous.
If you told me you saw your ex wife and you were trying to get to the next county i would give you a police escort. LOL

I've given lots of warnings to folks that are cool, funny, friendly and polite. Given lots of tickets to be people that are rude, aggressive and generally a-holes. The ones that run their mouths the most tend to be the ones that are least likely to come to court. And if they come to court they tend to interrupt the Judge, act like dipbababooeys and talk themselves into worse punishments. Some folks just like paying that stupid tax. 0 -

Yes...auto censor..not my technical term...dips-hit is tame compared to what I tend to use.0 -

Over the 47 years I have been driving, I've "Polite Talked" myself out of more tickets than I have received![:D]
There have also been a slight few police officers that you couldn't get out of a ticket no matter what!! Perhaps if I had some cleavage![:D]0 -

When you do a stop, why do you not require the driver to hand you the keys? It would prevent driveoffs and dangerous chases.0 -

I have had people turn cars off (Especially sketchy ones who may get the idea to flee.. and those with loud engines/exhausts so we can speak), and in the case of a serious/felony stop pull them out and drop them out the window before they're ordered out of their car... but not hand me the keys on a routine stop.
It's one more intrusion and would probably negatively add to an already unpleasant experience for the driver (I was treated like a criminal, etc...)... plus it's one more thing to be responsible for and to have to fumble with when I am walking up and back etc.

The first thing I always did when approaching a car after making a stop was to tell the driver to place his hands on top of the steering wheel, and if a front seat passenger to place his on the dash. Then I instructed the driver to move only his left hand, remove the key, and hand it to me. Of course most of my stops were as part of the Fugitive Unit. 0 -
I guess I should have asked for one lady's keys. After handing me her credentials, she said she had to pick-up her kids at school, would be back & took off. She did come back & got her ticket for speeding in the school zone. 0 -
If I was the police, I'll be pulling everyone over that has a light out, failed to use a turn signal. and playing on their phone.
