Loaning "things out"
I stopped doing this. I used to let others use my tools, truck, guns, whatever. Got to he point where it was difficult to keep track of who had what and ended up not getting alot of "stuff" back. Becoming an old crumugin I guess[:(!]

I still do against better judgement , some things have never been returned when I see the fellows its always I have it by th edoor I drop it off ( if they did not move evey few weeks I would track them down ) just count them as never being returned
many years ago I had a car trailer I loaned a close friend about a month went by so I call .. AHH I loaded it to my cousin I did not think you would care he had some fire wood OK call the cousin ahhh I loaned it to xxx I did not think you would care .. called my buddy it had been loaned out to several more people but he tracked it down .. took advantage of me being a nice guy0 -
When I can't find something, I usually assume one of my kids has borrowed it. So I start asking and thinking , trying to remember. For days. Then I forget whether I've asked this son or that daughter so I start asking again. Then I give up. It might be days, months or weeks, but I find it right where I put it. 0 -
I take a picture of them with whatever they borrowed and tell them, "It's so I won't forget who I loaned it to". 0 -

Except for one of my sons, anybody that wants to borrow anything of mind has to leave a deposit of two times what it would cost to buy it new. They always bring it right back if they decide to borrow it in the first place 0 -
Ok to loan out: tools, things like that
Not ok: pickup trucks

At one point, I'd loan out tools, etc, to just about anyone if they needed help. Not any more, unless I know them, and well at that.
What soured me on it was loaning a torque wrench to my next door neighbor. Said it might take a couple days before he'd be done with it, and I said no problem. So, a couple days go by, I'm out in the garage doing some routine maintenance on my Jeep, and he brings it back.
"Thanks for letting my borrow that breaker bar. Sure did come in handy!"

I loaned one rife 35 years ago to a GF's brother
I just bought a new marlin 30-30 and he wanted to "play with it "
a week or so later I ask he said here I have in in my trunk
I was shocked it was covered with surface rust he just said must have got wet some time .. he was a farmer to him it was just a tool so what if its rusty .. I was pissed off but took the blame on my self for being stupid and letting him take it thinking every one took care of guns ( wrong ) and because I was borrowing his sister and just being nice ..

Neighbor borrowed a couple of wrenches.
A couple of years later, his son brought them back.
Years later neighbor came over to borrow something else.
Asked if I had one, I said yes.
I asked him if he remembers the wrenches his son brought back, that he had borrowed.
He said...no, I said..exactly, I turned and closed the door.
Borrowed things kept coming back broke.
Ended up not loaning anything out now days.0 -
I will loan my vehicles to family when they are in a bind...they always bring them back fully fueled an detailed,
I won't loan my power tools or guns to anyone...no way, no how.0 -
The last thing I loaned other than money was in the 1970s. I loaned my brother-in-law my mattock. A mattock is a tool I don?t use very often so I didn?t find out for a couple of years that he sold it at a yard sale. He forgot it wasn?t his. That was the end of my keeping the tool shed for friends and relatives.
I loaned a gun once in my life. It came back in a timely manner with a broken stock. No offer to pay for the stock, it must have been broken when I loaned it.
On the rare occasion I loan money I decide if I can afford to flush that much money. If I can I count it as flushed money because it?s rare to get any of it back.
I don?t like to loan stuff, so I don?t.
My father-in-law never borrowed anything; he would just come over to my house and break stuff. I would say something like ?Damn it Oscar, I wish you hadn?t done that?. He would say ?I don?t reckon it matters?.0 -

Good policy...anything of significant value does not get loaned...other people don't treat my stuff in with the same care as I treat my stuff.

Years back when I use to spin wrenches for a living, the guys in the shop had a rule..............
"If you have to borrow a tool from a fellow mechanic, more than one time, you need to own that tool. The Snap-on guy comes every Friday morning."
My sons learned the hard way, letting their friends work on their cars here. I was always glad to give them tips on this or that and my tool box was open to them. Then I started missing tools. Talkied to my sons. Several of their "friends" are no longer allowed here and my sons not longer call them friends.
Younger son once loaned his Ruger .22 to a friend who wanted to use it for squirrel season. Took him months to get it back. The barrel was heavily rusted when it came back. Ain't his friend any lonnger.0 -
Borrow what you want if your on the "A" list. "A-" uh NO.

Had an old Ithica single gauge 12 to loan out to someone to hunt. Everyone of them complained that gun kicked like a mean mule. [;)] 0 -
after many years of NO..i loaned a pressure washer out to a friend who was hired to do a cleanup job...he did not flush the garden hose before hooking it up and ruined the pump ...cost me $100...NEVER AGAIN 0 -

I used to keep ( very well worn), items, tools, weedeater, chainsaw ect. for loaners. weedeater was the best, I had welded a strait shaft on an old green machine motor, that thing would shake the crap out of you, less 10 minutes your arms would be numb, loaned it to brother in law who was allways borrowing things, he never quit complaining about it, he wanted to borrow my chainsaw about year or so later, I told him he could use my old homelite but it shook about as bad as the weedeater, he said no and never asked for anything else..... 0 -
Many years ago a very close friend?& hunting buddy was doing a restaurant rehab and needed to re-plumb a lot of water and black pipe, 1" to 3" dia. and didn't have a pipe cutting/threading tripod stand or the heavy duty threading dies or die ratchet wrenches as required, but I did so I helped him out because they were fairly expensive to buy.
That was the last time I saw them, as a couple months later he told me they disappeared from the worksite over a holiday weekend.
He never offered to replace them, said things happen, I learned my lesson and replaced him with a new hunting buddy, and I don't lend out things unless I am there to help out with whatever tool is requested, if I can't help, I don't loan, and always take what is "lent" home each day.0 -
Many years ago when I sold tools at sears, they did a craftsman club questionnaire asking what is your most borrowed craftsman tool....one write in answer topped the list with about 3/4 of the responses-"I do not loan my craftsman tools"! 0 -
