Yellow Jacket Hive from Hell

Girlfriend was complaining about yellow jackets on the porch. We have a big porch with a roof.
I figured she has mis-identified the bugs since yellow jackets build hives underground.

So I went to check it out, and yes they were yellow jackets. I looked around, girl friend had a basket, about 20 inches wide there on the porch, and she had put some potting soil and some kind of buds or roots in there, temporary storage. And the damn yellow jackets had built a hive there in the basket.

And while I was inspecting they got riled up, I looked and saw a swarm of about 80 of the damn bugs and they started to nail me! Got hit 4 times and went right inside, and a half dozen followed me inside. Good name for a football team, Yellow Jackets, because they gang up on you.

So I got the can of wasp spray and went right back out and hosed down the hive, went back five minutes later and threw the basket over the porch rail and 30 feet to the driveway, got stung twice more.

Damn yellow jacket stings hurt for about 5 days. Bad Ass bugs.

Anyway, lucky she found the nest and got me to handle it because, she might have, one day, picked up her basket to carry out into the yard, and then the bees got riled up, and she is carrying a big yellow jacket hive in her hands! She would have gotten stung 30 or 40 times, could have been life threatening.

Bad year for hornets and yellow jackets.

    I went to school in Sidney Oh
    team name "yellow jackets" not sure how long they have used it but have seen year books from the early 1950's with logo on it also
    my kids school were pirates but along the way the pirate lost the sword and mean expression ( to be PC [:(!][:(!])

    Benadryl. Good advice. I am not allergic to bee stings, hell for that matter I am not allergic to poison ivy can handle the stuff all day and not get a case of it.

    But the girlfriend is somewhat allergic to bee stings and I have made damn sure that she has a box of Benadryl in the kitchen cabinet.
    Benadryl can be a life-saver if a person is allergic to bee stings, or to shrimp, to, whatever. I have seen it in use on paramedic calls and this stuff is the real deal.

    Seriously if Shirley got stung 30 times I think it would kill her and her only hope would be to take a 25 mg Benadryl. Plus I told her to chew the tablet up and hold it in the mouth for a few minutes, absorbed much quicker than swallowing.

    I've never been allergic to stings, but once while living in Alabama, I dropped the gas cap from my lawn mower on top of the hive/hole and reached for it just as they came out.

    I don't know how many times they got me but my hand swelled up like a grapefruit...so big I thought it was going to split open.

    Benadryl has saved several of my hunting dogs when bitten by Diamondback Rattlers, per my Vets advice I give'em the pills and a small dark area to lie down in ie.(closet) and keep'em calm. Never lost a dog yet [;)]

    As I said in another post this the worst year in a long while. If I go outside they are on me. So far today was the only day I have been stung.

    But cannot find where they are coming from.

    US55840: Buffalo Flies? or, Black Flies


    I am from Georgia never heard of these bugs. Back 30 years ago went up to Ontario on a canoe trip in June.
    We were paddling along, been out in the boat about 2 hours, I had a 3 inch wide bald spot on top of my head.
    At one point I reached up and rubbed my head, my hand came down covered in blood! Good Lord I didn't know what the hell was going on but I put my damn hat on quick. I thought I was in an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

    At the camp site that night there were some Minnesota Yankees there, they told me about black flies. Those tiny bugs are some nasty critters. Don't hurt when they chew into your flesh.

    I went back up there 6 more times, but always in September, I didn't want to mess with the Canadian black flies any more.
