Home phone was out
So to call it in I had to drive part way to town to get cell reception. Finally got thru to Century Link and the only way you could talk to someone was texting. So I sat in a Parking lot waiting took a 1/2 hour before someone got on line then after another 1/2 hour I got pissed cause they did not seem to listen. I kept asking is the service outage cause you have crews working in the area. No that is not the problem she said. What the hell they are stringing line you sure that is not the problem.
Got pissed hung up called my number and sure enough my answering machine picks up. Not 5 minutes from when they said they called and all it did was ring.
So I'm sitting here wondering if a technician is going to show up so I can tell them their service number sucks.

With out the phone the Internet would have been down. 0 -
I did not know anyone had a land line anymore, is that because there is no cell service where you live? 0 -

Nope, DSL will work on one conductor, dial tone will not. Depending on where the one side is open you may even run at full speed or down to half. Both tip and ring open then dsl will be down too.
I work for the company in question as a tech.0 -

We have a landline only because the internet service would go up $30 a month without the phone service, wierd, cancel the phone and the bill goes up.0 -

Niether have I, the bundled package is cheaper than stand alone internet service.0 -
Similar deal here with comcast the land line comes discounted with the bundle triple play. All calls are annoyance type. So we turn down the ringers and ignore the calls. 0 -

Yup, we have a land line 'cause it's less expensive buying the "bundle" of internet, cable and landline than just internet and cable.
Last time my land line quite functioning, a damn rabbit had chewed thru the wire from the phone box into the house. They only service the line to their phone box on the house .. beyond that they charge $120 per hour and I refuse to pay so do my own work on phone lines after the box.

Have an old plug in phone. Go out to the box and plug in direct. No Dial tone there it is there fault.0 -

Yep, same here, package price for phone and dsl is $10 cheaper per month than standalone dsl. Its about keeping access lines on the books for phone companies numbers for FCC and Im sure for investors too. Just like why we push bonded service over single line, it doubles the number of lines on the company reports. (Bonded DSL is two matched DSL lines bonded together at the modem to theoretically double your speed)0 -
And just as a PSA, at the demarcation point which is called a SNI or NID (phone box on your house or on a post), on the side where the drop wire comes in from the phone company, that is phone company property, it connects to a protection block which then connects to a registration jack. At this point it is customer owned property. There is a test jack there to test the signal coming from the phone company and a place to connect inside house wiring. Since divestiture in the 1984 it is all billable to troubleshoot beyond the registration jack. You can purchase line backer to cover basic repair of your inside wiring and jacks but it is limited to repair of existing, doesn't cover running new wire. That is billable at T&M.
Old NID's from before the 80's may be just a protection block and nothing else but the same rules apply.0 -
Mine is on a Post. When they 1st hooked me up I checked what they covered and its to the post after that its up to me. 0 -

And yes our customer service reps suck. Especially the Phillipine call centers. And now we just closed all our retail stores which had been our go to for getting customer's help. Best thing is to talk to your local tech when he comes out and get to know him. We have a lot of really good techs out in the field.0 -
