laid off Fed workers

The common theme seems to be that they won't be able to play their bills ---- living from pay check to pay check.

Can they not apply for unemployment ???

    We are not "unemployed" we're "furloughed" which is vastly different.

    if we had many in congress(small letters) that would see protecting AMERICA as a priority , political moves like this would be unneccessary

    Sounds nasty but if you can't pay your bills without a paycheck for 3 months then you are in over your head, financially. Of course the media says their children are going hungry and people are being evicted ect. which is all more BS.

    I just finished a week of busting my ass at the VA Hospital and will be back there on Monday asa will the rest of the staff. Of course there is a crew there working weekends and nights also.

    No change at all for us. Operations as usual and not even talk about the shutdown.

    The government only shuts down NON-essential departments...

    If they're not essential, they're not needed and just a drain out my taxes... So why the hell should I care,shut them down permanently that way I don't have to pay so much in taxes!!!!

    So what if they have to get out of one welfare line and jump in another... At least in the other welfare line they won't get as much from, which will save me money in the long run.

    Unemployment Compensation is a state program. Furloughed employees in Maryland must be out of work for a minimum of 4 weeks before they can even apply, but regulations vary by state.

    In the federal government, "essential" & "non-essential" employees are determined by each agency, for every occurrence, & is based on the amount of money available. Generally, "essential" employee will be guards, police, facilities managers, computer operators, & emergency response personnel. Until you find that some service you need won't be available, you won't be able to see the difference.

    The checks for your Social Security will be mailed (or transmitted) to beneficiaries by the Dept of the Treasury. But, folks just turning 65 may or may not find their local office open. So, agency heads try to avert immediate crises, but there still could be long term effects that we can't see from the outside.

    TSA officers are still working at the airports, but every day more of them phone in "sick". And, hopefully, Dept of Agriculture inspectors are still working at Ports of Entry, or we may lose a lot of our crops when an invasive insect sneaks into the country.

    when did this take place? I was furloughed in 2011 and went right in the next day and signed up . no waiting

    Yep, all they have to do is give Trump the money. Five billion is a drop in an ocean to what those f#%$s are spending. You can bet Nancy wouldn't hesitate to spend 100 times that on world wide abortion or support of transgender equality in Islam.

    I went to a gun auction today and bought a shotgun. When I checked out my background check went through fast. The guy working said they have been quick all day and the shutdown must not include the folks who run the background checks.

    All of their back pay will be given to them when this ends. They just get a vacation with the payday at the end of the vacation.

    I was asked to volunteer my services to assist in collaring female mountain lions as part of a federally funded study which is now on hold. I provide my trained hounds, my expertise in locating the lions, snowmobiles and truck, and provide the gas and oil to operate them. My out of pocket expenses to help them are around $50-$100 a trip.


    So I catch a female lion yesterday and called the biologists to see if they want come up and slap a collar on her. Nope, they told me, not with the government shutdown going on. I'm like what?? You ask me to volunteer at my own expense but you won't drive your personal vehicle 10 minutes so I can snowmobile you back to the lion tree? Nope.


    Hmmmm, okay then.....
